CORRECTION: Discord Isn't Banning You For Mod Links (I Screwed Up)

It turns out the only thing getting nuked from orbit this week was my credibility regarding a certain viral rumor.

Discord logo and wordmark in white against a deep blue background with floating, blurry cosmetic gaming items.

A few days ago I wrote a piece screaming from the rooftops that Discord was nuking accounts for sharing mods. I saw the Reddit threads, I saw the panic, and I tapped into that cynicism that comes with covering this industry for too long. I told you to treat URLs like they were radioactive. Well, I was wrong. The internet is a game of telephone and I ended up shouting the wrong message at the end of the line.

The Reality Check

I hold myself to a standard here at NeonLightsMedia. I love covering rumors and I love speculating on the "what ifs" of the industry, but when I call out a company for anti-consumer practices, I need to be right. In this case I missed the mark.

A reader named Kuma Kommando sent a very polite but firm email to editor@neonlightsmedia.com pointing out that the "2 year ban" story was effectively a hoax. They noted that despite the hysteria, this has been debunked. I looked into it deeper based on their tip and they were absolutely right. I appreciate when you guys keep me honest. We aren't a massive corporate machine here. It's just me and occasionally some friends / colleagues writing what we see. Sometimes I see a mirage and think it's an oasis of content. Thank you, Kuma, for the reality check.

What Is Actually Happening

Here is the cold hard truth so you can stop sweating every time you paste a URL into your group chat.

NexusMods has officially quashed the rumor. Their community manager, Pickysaurus, made a statement clarifying that there is currently no risk of being moderated by Discord for posting NexusMods links. The initial reports of bans likely stemmed from a perfect storm of coincidence. Someone probably got banned for something actually nefarious and happened to have a mod link in their message history. The internet took that data point and spun it into a conspiracy theory about Sony cracking down on Spider-Man mods.

We tested this ourselves after the fact. We threw links into DMs and servers. We are still here. No automated hammer came down. No copyright strikes. Just business as usual.

Why I Believed It

I want to explain why I jumped the gun without making excuses.

We live in an era where companies are becoming increasingly hostile to user freedom. Sony is aggressive with their IP and Discord’s AI moderation is often terrible and opaque. It felt true because it fit the pattern of how gamers usually get treated. But feelings aren't facts. The fact is that Discord isn't currently hunting you down for sharing a texture swap for Marvel Rivals.

I will take the L on this one. Go ahead and share your mods. If Discord actually starts banning people for real in the future, I’ll be the first to scream about it again. But for now, you are safe.
