In a Move From a Bygone Era, DOOM Eternal Gets Official, Full-Blown Mod Support

You have to check the calendar to make sure it’s not 2005. In a move that feels like a beautiful relic from a forgotten era of PC gaming, id Software has officially launched full-blown mod support for DOOM Eternal on PC. As one player aptly put it, official mod support for anything in 2025 is "practically unheard of," and they’re not wrong. This is a big fucking deal.

more Than Just a Mod Loader

This isn't some half-assed, third-party workaround. The update, which is out now on Steam and coming soon to the Microsoft Store, introduces a whole new launcher that cleanly separates the vanilla game from your modded monstrosities. For players, there’s a built-in mod browser with over 650 community creations already tagged and ready to go. You can browse, download, manage your load order with a simple drag-and-drop, and jump right into the chaos without ever having to alt-tab to a sketchy website.

Of course, if you just want to play the base game, you can simply tell the launcher to skip itself on startup.

Handing Over the Keys to Hell

For the actual creators, id has done something almost unthinkable in the modern age: they've handed over the keys to the kingdom. The update includes access to idStudio Beta, the very same editor the developers used to build DOOM Eternal.

On top of that, they’re providing massive asset packs containing everything from the base campaign, both The Ancient Gods DLCs, PvP maps, and even tutorial levels to help new modders get started. They are giving the community the tools and the toys and telling them to go nuts. The only minor restriction is that while modders can use assets from the DLCs, they can't build and play fully functional DLC maps just yet.

Let’s be honest, this almost never happens anymore. In an industry obsessed with locking down ecosystems and selling you content piece by piece, a developer handing over the source of its magic to the fans is a radical act. It’s a massive show of respect for the modding community that a game like DOOM was built on in the first place. Bravo, id. Bravo.
