God of War: Amazon Just Ordered Two Seasons, So Get Ready For The Remasters

Kratos is coming to streaming, and Amazon is apparently terrified of cancelling him too early.

Usually, when a streaming service adapts a massive video game IP, they order a pilot. Maybe they order a ten-episode first season if they are feeling spicy. But according to a new report from Deadline, Amazon Prime Video has skipped the dating phase and gone straight to marriage.

They have officially ordered two full seasons of the live-action God of War series.

This is a massive vote of confidence. It suggests that the scripts are already in incredible shape or that Amazon is desperate to find their next Fallout-sized hit to pair with The Boys.

The Creative Heavyweights

The showrunner is Ronald D. Moore. If that name sounds familiar, it is because he created the Battlestar Galactica reboot. The man knows how to take a nerdy property and turn it into a gritty, political, character-driven drama.

But the real news here is the director.

Frederick E.O. Toye has boarded the project to direct the first two episodes. Toye recently won an Emmy for directing the "Crimson Sky" episode of Shogun. If you haven't seen Shogun, that episode is a masterpiece of tension and violence. He also worked on The Boys and Fallout.

Basically, Amazon has hired the guy who knows how to make prestige TV look expensive and feel dangerous.

Pre-Production Is A Go

The report states that pre-production is currently underway in Vancouver. This means the casting department is frantically looking for a man who is 6'6", built like a brick house, and can grow a beard that commands respect from Norse gods.

Casting Kratos is going to be the hardest job in Hollywood right now. You need someone with the physical presence of a WWE wrestler but the acting chops to carry the emotional weight of the 2018 game. If they mess this up, the show is dead on arrival.

The Inevitable "Corporate Synergy"

Here is the part where I get cynical.

With a high-profile show confirmed, you need to prepare yourself for what Sony is going to do next. Remember when The Last of Us HBO show dropped? Sony immediately released a remake of the first game.

We are absolutely going to see a "God of War: Remastered" or "Definitive Collection" announced for the PS5 Pro. It will probably cost $70.

The hardcore fans on Twitter are going to scream about it. They will say the 2018 game still looks fine (which it does). They will say it is a cash grab (which it is).

But Sony isn't making that for us. They are making it for the millions of normies who watch the Amazon show, fall in love with Kratos, and then buy a PlayStation to see what happens next. It is the exact same playbook they used for Joel and Ellie.

So don't be surprised when the "God of War Collection" leaks next month. Just enjoy the show and try not to get too mad at the marketing machine.
