So, You Want to Fight God? How to Kill the Arc Raiders Matriarch
You thought the Queen was the baddest bot on the block? Cute. The Matriarch is here, and it makes the Queen look like a discount toaster.
This thing is a walking fortress. It’s a 35,000 HP behemoth that looks like a rhinoceros beetle fucked a skyscraper, and it’s got the arsenal to match.
Killing it is, without a doubt, one of the hardest things you can do in Arc Raiders right now. It's a massive resource sink and a magnet for every opportunistic little shit on the server.
But that loot. Oh, that sweet, high-tier loot. If you're crazy enough to try it, I'm here to tell you how I've managed to pull it off.
Finding This Metal Monstrosity
First, you can't just stumble upon this thing. The Matriarch only appears during a specific "Matriarch Event." You'll know the map is hot when you see a little diamond-link icon next to it.
Once you’re in, just look for the giant red beam of light coming from its "head." You can't miss it.
I absolutely recommend doing this on the Dam Battlegrounds map if you can. The boss spawns in a pit at the dam break, which is surrounded by high ground. This is critical. Fighting this thing on flat ground is a goddamn suicide wish.
What It Throws At You
The Matriarch’s toolkit is designed for one thing: to make you panic. It doesn't just try to kill you; it tries to overwhelm you from every possible angle.
It has its main attacks, and just to be an asshole, it summons legions of other ARCs to keep you busy.
Matriarch's Arsenal of Pain
| Attack | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Homing Missiles | Its primary attack. A massive barrage of rockets that will hunt you down. This is the main killer. |
| Gas Mortars | Fires mortars that leave poison gas clouds. Get caught, and you'll be coughing, slowed, and unable to shoot. |
| Flashbangs | Blasts a white-out grenade that blinds you for a solid 3-5 seconds. Usually right before the missiles hit. |
| Energy Shield | A defensive shield that is completely indestructible. It blocks all bullets, grenades, and even Wolfpacks. |
| Summon ARCs | Calls in Wasps, Hornets, Leapers, and worst of all, Rocketeers and Bastions to ruin your day. |
Gearing Up for a God-Awful Fight
Do not, under any circumstances, try this with budget gear. You will be wasting your time and everyone else's.
For your augment, you want the Tactical Mk. 3 (Defensive). Its passive lets you recharge your shield while running, which is the only way you'll survive the missile barrages. Pair this with a Heavy Shield.
For weapons, it's simple. The Hullcracker is your boss-killer. Nothing else strips armor and hits weak points this hard. Bring a Venator as your secondary to deal with the endless stream of ARCs and human intruders.
Pack your bags with Sterilized Bandages, Vita Shots, and as many Shield Recharges as you can carry. For grenades, Wolfpacks are fantastic for adding damage, and a few Showstoppers can stun the trash mobs.
And for the love of god, put a Raider Hatch Key in your safe pocket.
How to Actually Kill The Damn Thing
The strategy is all about two things: positioning and focus.
Your entire squad needs to get to the high ground. I'm not asking, I'm telling you. Those homing missiles cannot easily track up and over high ledges. If you're on the Pipeline Tower at the Dam, you can watch them slam into the wall below you.
Do not shoot its legs. They are armored to hell and it's a waste of ammo. Your one and only target is the head and upper hull.
Use the Hullcracker to blast off the armor plating. Eventually, you will expose a bright red Head Core. This is the weak point. Once you see red, everyone focuses fire on it.
The second that indestructible shield pops up, stop firing. You are wasting ammo. This is your cue to reload, heal, and pop a shield recharge.
While this is happening, you must have someone managing the adds. The Matriarch will summon Rocketeers and Bastions. If you ignore them, they will wipe you faster than the boss will. Use the Venator and clean them up.
Rinse and repeat. Break armor, blast core, survive shield, kill adds.
Watch Your Back (And Your Loot)
Here's the real kick in the teeth. The Matriarch fight is a giant, flashing "COME KILL ME" sign for every other raider on the map.
The biggest threat isn't the robot, it's the three-man shotgun team that's been watching you do all the work.
This is another reason the high ground is so important. It's a defensive position. You can see them coming. Set traps at your ziplines. Keep your head on a swivel.
When the Matriarch finally explodes, don't relax. It spawns one final, pissed-off wave of ARCs, usually including Bastions, right as it dies.
The Good Stuff
If you survive all that, you're rich. The debris field is packed with high-tier materials like Magnetic Accelerators, Advanced ARC Powercells, and ARC Performance Steel.
The jackpot, though, is the Matriarch Reactor. It's an exotic-rarity item that will almost certainly be used to craft the next tier of absurd weapons.
It’s a brutal, unfair, and chaotic fight. But standing in the wreckage, pockets full of loot... well, it almost makes the trauma worth it. Almost.
Frequently Asked Questions: The Matriarch
Can you solo the Matriarch in ARC Raiders?
Technically, yes. Practically, I am telling you it is a miserable afternoon. The Matriarch is explicitly balanced to crush well prepared squads. If you insist on dropping in alone, you need a massive stockpile of ammunition and the strict discipline to methodically strip her armor with a Hullcracker. The brutal reality here is that the giant machine is not even your biggest threat. Your actual problem is the three man rat squad sitting on a ridge, watching you do all the heavy lifting, just waiting to push your position and steal your loot the absolute second the boss drops.
What's the best strategy to defeat the Matriarch?
Survival dictates that you prioritize positioning over raw damage. You need high ground immediately. Her homing missiles struggle to track targets over vertical ledges. I always set up on the Pipeline Tower at the Dam, where you get to watch those rockets slam harmlessly into the concrete below you. Stop shooting her legs. Her lower half is armored to hell and dumping magazines into it is a complete waste of your economy. Your sole objective is the upper hull. Blast the plating off with your Hullcracker until the glowing red Head Core is exposed. When that red core pops, you dump every ounce of DPS you have directly into it. When she deploys her indestructible shield, stop pulling the trigger. Use that downtime to reload, pop a shield recharge, and heal.
What's the best loadout for the Matriarch?
My advice is to never walk into this fight with standard scavenger gear. Bring a Hullcracker as your primary to shatter her armor, backed by an Equalizer or Jupiter to shred the exposed core. Your grenade slots need to be split. Bring Wolfpack Grenades strictly for crowd control and Deadline Mines for chunking the boss. For equipment, pack a Heavy Shield, Barricade Kits, Ziplines, and Smoke Grenades to break line of sight when things go south. Stuff your safe pocket with a Raider Hatch Key and more medical supplies than a field hospital.
What's the best location to fight the Matriarch?
I consider the Dam Battlegrounds to be the smartest choice by a wide margin. Claiming the Pipeline Tower gives you natural cover that completely negates her missile barrages. Conversely, fighting her at the Blue Gate is practically suicide. The terrain is entirely too open and leaves you completely exposed to both the boss and rival snipers.
How many Wolfpack Grenades does it take to kill the Matriarch?
If you are trying to brute force a fresh Matriarch purely with explosives, you are looking at roughly 30 to 45 Wolfpacks. That is a ridiculous inventory drain. If you play smart, strip her armor first, and only chuck grenades during her vulnerable windows, you can drop that number to the high teens or low twenties. Regardless, a backpack full of Wolfpacks will rarely finish the job alone. You absolutely need heavy weapons to supplement the damage.
How many Deadline Mines does it take to kill the Matriarch?
A solo player or a duo can usually put her in the dirt with about seven perfectly placed Deadline Mines. If your squad is also tossing Wolfpacks, expect to need around six to eight. My most consistent execution method is to use a snaphook to grapple directly onto her top hull, plant two Deadlines, drop off, and repeat the process three times.
How many Wolfpacks does it take to kill a Rocketeer?
Exactly one. A single Wolfpack Grenade instantly vaporizes a Rocketeer or a Bastion. Do not waste these on the boss if you are drowning in enemy reinforcements. Save them specifically for the adds she calls in, because ignoring the smaller machines will wipe your squad faster than the Matriarch herself ever could.
What do you do when the Matriarch raises her shield?
Take your finger off the trigger immediately. Her shield is indestructible and shooting it just burns your hard earned credits. This is your designated breather. Reload your heavy weapons, inject your heals, and get your shields back to full capacity. If you are feeling exceptionally brave, you can physically slip inside the shield bubble to point blank her exposed core, but otherwise, just wait it out.
How do you manage the adds during the Matriarch fight?
I strongly suggest you assign one player to do nothing but crowd control. The Matriarch constantly summons Rocketeers and Bastions to flank your position throughout the fight. If your entire squad is staring down scopes at the boss, a single Rocketeer will flank you and end your raid. Keep your Venator loaded and use your Wolfpacks to instantly delete the heavy reinforcements the second they spawn.
What loot do you get for killing the Matriarch?
The resulting debris field is an absolute goldmine. You will find Magnetic Accelerators, Advanced ARC Powercells, and ARC Performance Steel scattered everywhere. The real jackpot is the Matriarch Reactor, which is an exotic rarity crafting component. You also have a chance to pull the Aphelion blueprint, which simply does not drop anywhere else in the game.
What is the Matriarch Reactor used for?
This is a Legendary crafting material that dictates your late game firepower. You can either recycle it for a massive stack of base resources, or you can take it to a Level 3 Gunsmith station to craft the Aphelion battle rifle. Because this is the only way to build that specific gun, the Matriarch is easily the most highly contested target on the map.
Does the Matriarch drop the Aphelion blueprint?
Yes, and she is the only enemy on the planet that does. The blueprint has a chance to spawn inside the physical core she drops upon death. Keep in mind that only one core drops per kill. If you have rival squads pushing you as the boss dies, it immediately turns into a desperate foot race to secure the drop.
Are the Queen and Matriarch the same enemy?
No. The Matriarch is a heavily militarized evolution of the standard Queen. While the Queen technically boasts a higher raw health pool, I find the Matriarch to be infinitely more lethal. She brings thick armor plating, deployable force fields, homing missiles, and an endless army of adds to the fight. Her toolkit creates absolute chaos.
What's the biggest danger when the Matriarch dies?
The fight does not end when her health bar hits zero. As she collapses, she spawns one final, enraged wave of ARC units, usually including multiple Bastions. Do not drop your guard to celebrate. Furthermore, every single raider in the instance heard the explosions and knows exactly where the loot is sitting. Trap your ziplines, check your corners, and be prepared to fight another squad on your way to the extraction point.
