Esoteric Ebb Drunk Sphinx Guide: How to Solve the Easy Riddle

Most games treat taverns as simple resting areas. Esoteric Ebb treats them as political minefields guarded by a literal mythical beast.

The Drunk Sphinx is the central hub of Tolstad. You will spend a significant amount of time here piecing together clues about the exploded tea shop, debating political theory with the owner, and trying to avoid getting stabbed by the local patrons. It is also home to Olzis, an ancient gynosphinx who holds the key to one of the most lucrative Esoteric Ebb major quest feats in the entire game.

The tavern is dense with branching dialogue and hidden mechanics. If you say the wrong thing to the wrong goblin, you will lose a chunk of your health bar. If you attempt to steal from the wrong donation bowl, you will ruin your reputation. Here is exactly how to navigate the Drunk Sphinx, extract the information you need, and solve the infuriatingly vague "Easy Riddle" quest without getting yourself killed.

Navigating the Tavern Floor

Before you even approach the massive creature drinking wine on the stage, you need to deal with the regulars. The floor of the tavern holds several distinct encounters that will test your patience and your stats.

Dealing with Razz

Razz is the goblin standing near the stairs. If you attempt to pickpocket him, he immediately pulls a dagger on you. You can lean into the blade to assert dominance, but it will cost you up to 6 HP just to earn his respect.

The optimal path here is to approach him normally, kick him lightly during the intro for a quick XP boost, and then pick up his glass during the main dialogue hub. Do not pour the drink out. Select the option to smash it into his face. If you pass the Strength check, you trigger a unique story beat where he heals himself with an illicit substance, and you walk away with a solid chunk of Medium XP.

The Musician and the Donation Bowl

Nearly is the goblin musician playing near the center of the room. Do not interact with her donation bowl until you actually speak to her and let her start her performance.

Once she is playing, drop a donation. The game tracks four distinct donation brackets (1, 10, 100, and 1000 crowns), and each one triggers a separate XP reward and unique dialogue. If you have the capital, dropping 1000 crowns causes the entire tavern to go silent and unlocks the "Story Donator" achievement. Whatever you do, absolutely do not try to steal from the bowl. If you fumble the Dexterity check, you will trip, lose 2d4 HP, and permanently anger the musician.

Extracting Intel from Rixbiter

Rixbiter is the tiefling owner behind the bar. She is your primary source of information regarding the Esoteric Ebb beginner's guide early quests, including the tea shop explosion and the missing paladin.

If you are currently on the hunt for the hag, tell Rix about the dead elf first. This significantly lowers the difficulty of the Charisma check required to get the hag's location out of her. You can also completely bypass the check by dropping a 1000 crown bribe into her tip jar, which functions as an automatic pass.

Olzis and the "Easy Riddle"

Olzis is the massive gynosphinx sitting on the stage. If you try to use the game's steal mechanic on her, she will instantly swat you across the room for a devastating 3d6 HP loss. Leave your sticky fingers in your pockets.

Stage 1: The Wine Riddle

When you first approach her, ask for a riddle. She recites a poem about something that clings to walls, matures in shadows, and acts as the "life of the ball."

The answer is Wine. If you pass a basic Intelligence check during the dialogue, your character will deduce this internally. If you fail, the game presents you with a massive list of incorrect answers. You must select "Wine." Answering correctly prompts her to hand you a Tavern Key and recite a second, much more complicated riddle involving Arcane flares, Primal strings, and Divine words.

Gathering the Prerequisites

The second riddle is not a verbal puzzle. It is an action puzzle. Before you even attempt it, you need two specific cantrips in your spellbook.

  1. Dancing Light: Head to the Lichhouse and find the pile of apples near where you found your cloak. Choose to eat your way through the pile. Passing the Constitution check rewards you with a hidden spell scroll for Dancing Light.

  2. Druidcraft: Find Nessan in the Goblin Garden. You have to pass a massive DC 20 Wisdom check to "show your primal attunement." If you succeed, you impress her and instantly acquire the Druidcraft cantrip.

Unlocking the Millennium Vault

The exact sequence required to solve the physical riddle and claim your reward.

Step Action Required
1. Timing & Isolation Return to the Drunk Sphinx the next morning. You must be completely alone. Dismiss Snell or any other companions before you enter.
2. Entry Use the Tavern Key Olzis gave you to unlock the front door.
3. Positioning Walk past the sleeping sphinx and stand directly on the stage behind her, near the unlit braziers.
4. The Arcane Flare Cast the Dancing Light cantrip. This will ignite the torches on the stage.
5. The Primal String Cast the Druidcraft cantrip immediately afterward. The vault door will grind open.

Once the vault opens, you complete the quest and gain access to the Deck of Many Things, which is a wildly chaotic artifact that can either bless you with immense power or instantly ruin your best starting stats.

Flirting with Danger

If you want to fully exhaust the tavern's content, you can attempt to romance the massive mythical beast.

Talk to Olzis about her history and ask about her love life. She will tell you a long, bitter story about her ex-boyfriend, an Androsphinx named Trembylem. The game tracks a hidden score during this conversation. If you agree with her and criticize men, you gain Positive points. If you collect enough Positive points, she rewards you with 4 Incense.

Once that is done, you can select the dialogue option to attempt to flirt with her. This triggers an absolutely brutal DC 30 Charisma check. The difficulty lowers slightly if you have the Bard feat or if you already solved her riddles, but it is still a massive hurdle.

If you miraculously pass the check, you deliver a sweeping romantic monologue. She is genuinely touched, but politely rejects you because she is contractually bound to the tavern. Out of pity for breaking your heart, she hands you a rare potion called The Mind Expansion. It is completely unnecessary for finishing the game, but it is a hilarious capstone to the encounter.
