Fatal Frame 2 Remake Endings Guide: How to Survive Minakami Village Without Losing Your Mind
Figuring out the exact requirements for every ending in Minakami Village feels like trying to read a map in the pitch dark.
The good news is that you do not actually need to play through this entire traumatizing ordeal four separate times to see everything. Koei Tecmo packed the remake of Crimson Butterfly with six distinct conclusions, ranging from mildly depressing to absolutely devastating, with maybe one genuine sliver of hope buried at the very bottom. Players are understandably hitting a wall trying to figure out which spirit stones trigger which cutscenes, especially when you factor in New Game Plus requirements and a few nasty side quest bugs. I spent an ungodly amount of time testing saves and tracking down community reports to build a straightforward roadmap. Here is exactly what you need to do to unlock every single ending without losing your mind.
The Ending Requirements Blueprint
Before we get into the heavy spoilers and boss strategies, you need to know what you are aiming for. Keep a close eye on your equipped spirit stones before you cross any major thresholds in the final chapter.
How to Farm Endings and Bypass the Sae Bug
Nobody wants to slog through the entire campaign just to swap out a single accessory at the finish line. The game expects you to use the chapter select feature to save your sanity.
Load up your cleared New Game Plus save file and use chapter select to drop directly into the final chapter. Play normally until you hit the Deep Path Tunnel. This is the critical moment. Save your game at the lantern right before entering the Ritual Altar room. From this exact save point, you can equip whatever specific spirit stone you need, walk into the boss arena, and trigger the corresponding ending. Once the credits roll, reload that exact save, swap your stones, and do it again.
There is a glaring issue you need to watch out for regarding the Sae Kurosawa 2 side quest. Players are getting completely stonewalled by a bug where the quest log demands you finish Chapter 8 and Sae Kurosawa 3 simultaneously. This is a logic loop error. You do not need to restart your whole run. Load a save where you have already cleared "The Promise" ending. Use chapter select to enter the final chapter, walk into the Kurosawa house main hall, and use your camera to expose Sae's revenant. This forces the quest to progress and unsticks your save file.
The Complete Endings Breakdown
Here is the step by step breakdown for surviving the final gauntlet and securing each specific conclusion. Keep your camera upgraded and your healing items stocked, because the back half of this game pulls absolutely no punches.
Lonely Road Home
This is less of a traditional ending and more of a narrative punishment for being a terrible sister. You can trigger this on your very first playthrough.
Once you reach the Kureha Shrine with Mayu, you will complete the pinwheel puzzle inside the Old Tree. Mayu gets abruptly dragged away. Instead of playing the hero, simply defeat the three wraiths guarding the outside of the shrine. Walk back inside and interact with the newly opened secret door. Mio will abandon Mayu to the village and escape into the forest alone. The game slaps you with a game over screen and forces a reload, but you do get the achievement for your cowardice.
Crimson Butterfly
This is the canonical nightmare you are forced into during your first run on Normal difficulty. You have to endure this one to unlock New Game Plus.
After Mayu vanishes at the shrine, follow the glowing crimson butterflies down to the Kurosawa House. Grab Mayu's Charm off the floor in the entrance hall. Navigate through the Guest Hallway and Cloth Hallway until you hit the Altar Room. You will see Mayu slip through the connecting corridors. Crawl through the gate and follow her path to the save room.
Step into the Hall of Ropes and prepare for the Kurosawa Matriarch boss. I highly recommend equipping the Chrysocolla charm here to boost your damage against groups. Focus entirely on the Matriarch. Damaging him chips away at the lesser priests backing him up. Once you deplete his first health bar, he enters an aggravated state and teleports into the rafters. Use a Special Shot to knock him back down to earth. Keep at least one lesser priest alive during this phase, otherwise the boss retreats to the ceiling and summons a fresh wave of enemies.
Push forward into the Deep Tunnel and head for the Ritual Room. You will finally face the Kusabi. He is intimidating but incredibly slow. Keep your distance, watch for his projectiles, and unload your strongest film into him. Defeating him triggers the cutscene where Mio finishes the dark ritual, sacrificing Mayu to the Abyss.
The Promise
This is where New Game Plus opens up the narrative. You need to finish Yae's side story first to earn Yae's Spirit Stone.
The route is identical to the Crimson Butterfly ending. You still have to fight the Matriarch in the Hall of Ropes. The only difference is that you must equip Yae's Spirit Stone right before you step into the Ritual Altar room in the Deep Path Tunnel.
Instead of finding the twins waiting on the altar, you will spot Mayu running toward the Torii gates. Chase her down. You have to fight the Kusabi again, and this time he enters an aggravated state at half health. Put him down and walk through the gates. Yae's spirit leaves Mio, reuniting with Sae in the Abyss. Both sisters survive.
The Abyss
This requires Kusabi's Sparkling Spirit Stone, earned by finishing his respective side story in NG+.
Follow the standard path and equip the sparkling stone before entering the Ritual Altar. This time, Mayu is weeping on the altar before transforming into Sae. Try to walk through the Torii gates and you will trigger a two phase Kusabi fight. His aggravated state in the second wave is brutal. He fires denser clusters of skulls and actively plunges the arena into darkness. Rely on your camera's indicator light to track him in the dark and snap a photo to break his stealth.
After he drops, proceed into the Abyss to fight Sae. Do not let her passive walking animation fool you. If she gets close, she will grab you and drain your health. Snap a stealth shot immediately to start the fight. You have to survive until her health hits the designated line to trigger a Fatal Frame moment. She will unleash blood tornadoes across the arena. Look for the tornado marked with a red arrow on your camera interface and shoot it. Shooting the wrong one causes massive splash damage. Once you win, Mio saves Mayu but looks directly into the Abyss, permanently losing her eyesight.
Sprouting Wings
You need both Sae's and Mayu's Spirit Stones for this one, unlocked by finishing their side quests.
Equip both stones before the Ritual Altar. Mayu will be standing peacefully on the altar. You have to survive the exact same two phase Kusabi fight and the subsequent Sae boss fight in the Abyss.
The trick here is a quick time event. After defeating Sae, Mayu stands on the edge of the pit. You must sprint toward her and hit the prompt to grab her hand. Mio fails the catch, sending both sisters plummeting into the dark, but the spirits of Yae and Sae manifest to carry them to safety.
Remaining Sun
This is the ultimate test. You cannot use chapter select for this. You have to play the entire game from start to finish on Nightmare difficulty. You also must equip Mio's Spirit Stone, which is your reward for clearing every single side story in the game.
Equip the stone before the Ritual Altar. You have to survive the Nightmare variants of the Kusabi and Sae fights. The critical catch is that you have exactly one minute to defeat Sae in the Abyss. If you miss the time limit, the game defaults you back to The Promise ending, completely wasting your Nightmare run.
Load your absolute best film, equip your strongest lenses, and play hyper aggressively. If you beat the clock, you get the prompt to grab Mayu. They fall, the spirits save them, and the curse is finally broken. You also get an exclusive post credits scene of the sisters sitting on a bench, confirming Mayu's leg is finally healed.
