Gothic 1 Remake: Where to Find a Free Bed Early
Getting screamed at by a dirt covered Digger just because you tried to take a quick nap is a miserable way to end your first day in the valley.
Sleeping is a crucial survival tool. It heals your wounds and lets you manually pass the time, with each dot on the rest menu representing one full hour. The problem is that almost every bed you stumble across has a bright red marker on it. That icon means the bed belongs to someone else, and the owner will aggressively wake you up the second you close your eyes. Before you waste half the night wandering in the dark, you should know exactly where to find an unclaimed cot. I spent plenty of time exploring the starting areas to track down the few spots where you can sleep uninterrupted.
Claiming Your Own Shack in the Old Camp
The Old Camp actually has a couple of free beds sitting completely empty right from the start. You just need to know which alleys to check. If you are struggling to navigate the settlement, I highly recommend checking out my guide on where to buy a map without getting ripped off before you start running around blindly.
The Arena Hut
This is your best option by far. It essentially functions as your own personal house. If you chat with Guy near the arena, he mentions a hut that recently got cleared out. To claim it, start at the north entrance of the camp and head left. Walk through the cluster of shacks until you reach the upper viewing platforms of the arena.
Look to your left for a shack featuring a distinct red cloth canopy over the door. You will know it is the right place because it has two drying animal pelts flanking the entrance and a fireplace with a scavenger bird cooking on a spit outside. The bed inside has no red ownership marker, making it entirely yours. Be sure to loot the chest inside to grab the Forgotten Recipe quest, because the previous owner apparently forgot all their valuables when they moved out.
The Smithy Backup Bed
If you need a quick rest on the other side of town, look for an open entrance with a ladder on the left side leading up toward the smithy. Tucked inside this tiny space are two beds. One is owned, but the other is completely free to use. It lacks the privacy of your arena shack, but it gets the job done.
The Fine Art of Squatting
You do not strictly have to hunt down free beds if you understand how the AI works. The residents of the Colony operate on daily schedules and frequently leave their huts completely empty for hours at a time. If you see an empty shack, just climb in and sleep until morning.
Even if you get caught trespassing, the consequences are hilariously mild. In my experience, if an NPC catches you squatting or lockpicking, they usually just give you a stern verbal warning instead of pulling a weapon. You can literally just wait for them to walk away and steal their bed anyway. It is an absurd loophole, but it works flawlessly.
Resting in the Swamp Camp
If your quests pull you away from the Old Camp and into the swamp, you can find a safe place to crash there as well. Just keep climbing the ladders and wooden walkways until you reach the absolute highest point of the camp. You will find a free hut up there, giving you a quiet place to sleep off whatever weird herbs the locals are burning below.
