Gothic 1 Remake: How to Farm Ore and Stop Being Broke
The Colony is actively designed to keep you poor, but I figured out exactly how to exploit the local economy so you can actually afford to survive.
If you've spent more than an hour inside the dome, you've probably noticed a massive problem. The economy is absolutely brutal. Items don't respawn, and enemies stay dead once you kill them (which is great for your safety but terrible for your wallet). To make things worse, vendors run out of Ore quickly. You can't just sleep for a week and expect them to magically restock their cash. Before you waste hours trying to grind your way out of poverty, you need to understand how to exploit the hunting mechanics and do a little light burglary.
The Hunting Hustle
Your absolute best long-term investment is learning how to butcher the wildlife you kill. Since enemies don't respawn, leaving valuable pelts and teeth to rot on a corpse is literally throwing money away.
Bribing Drax
You need to track down a hunter named Drax. He hangs out near the Old Camp right at the crossroads leading to the North Gate. Bring him a beer. Handing over a cold brew gets him talking about hunting, and he'll agree to train you. While you're in that starting zone, look around near the hanged man for Drax's Hunting Knife. If you return it to him, he hands over a Shortbow and some arrows. Arrows are absurdly expensive, so always take free ammo when someone offers it.
Butcher Training Costs
Training isn't free. You'll need to scrape together 150 Nuggets just to get started. Sell your junk, toss out unwanted weapons, and dump your excess food on traders like Fisk. I highly recommend rushing these skills the second you level up.
Here is exactly what you need to save up to become a master butcher.
Prioritize Teeth or Fur first. You'll earn a solid income trading these items, and then you can reinvest your profits back into learning the rest of the skills.
A Life Of Crime
If honest hunting sounds like too much work, you can always turn to burglary. It pays extremely well, but you're risking your life every time you break into a chest.
Red Text Means Danger
Anything you see in the world with beige text is free to grab. If the text is red, it belongs to someone. If you enter a hut and pick up a red item, the owner will demand you drop it immediately. Refuse after ten seconds, and they'll attack you. Getting knocked out is a complete disaster. They'll loot every single stolen item back from you, take all your hard-earned Ore, and even swipe valuable items like Magic Runes right out of your pockets (which is enough to make you rage-quit for the day).
If you try to throw the first punch to defend yourself, the entire camp aggros and they won't just knock you out. They'll kill you on the spot. If you're already making enemies by refusing to pay protection, you know exactly how fast these situations turn fatal. It's similar to the mess you find yourself in when deciding to kill or spare Grim outside the gates.
Smart Stealing
If you're going to be a thief, be smart about it. Wait for the guard shift changes. Observe when NPCs leave their homes to patrol or sit by the fire, and then sneak in. You'll need Lockpicks and a lot of patience to crack chests. Save your game before you start picking a lock, because breaking your only lockpick is an incredibly expensive mistake.
You can also talk to Fingers in the camp and pay him 50 Nuggets and 1 Skill Point to learn Pickpocketing. It opens up an infinite source of random NPC loot, but you need a high Dexterity score to pull it off without getting caught.
Scavenging And Bartering
Sometimes the best way to make Ore is by simply walking around and picking weeds.
Free Money On The Ground
Pick up absolutely everything. Inventory space isn't really an issue in this game. If you make it to the New Camp early on, selling Swamp grass will net you around 300 Ore very quickly. If you stumble across a caravan crossing the bridge outside the Old Camp heading to the mine, you can usually scavenge a ton of loose nuggets lying around that area.
You also need to cook your food. Raw meat sells for a pathetic amount, but taking it to a cooking fire (like the one near Diego or outside Guy's free hut) turns it into a high-value healing item that vendors actually want.
The Essence of Spirit Hustle
There's an incredibly valuable potion hidden near the Old Camp. Leave through the South Gate and look for a cave in the rock wall on your right. Keep going past the molerats to a small alcove. You'll find a bottle of Essence of Spirit sitting right there in the dirt.
If you drink it, your maximum Mana increases by 2. That's a huge boost early on, but the potion is also worth a staggering 135 Ore. The problem is no single vendor carries 135 Ore to pay you for it.
You have to barter. Go to traders with deep pockets like Fisk or Dexter. Trade the potion to them, but load up your side of the trade window with gear you actually need to balance the cost. This is the perfect way to grab some of the best early weapons in the game without spending a single piece of your actual Ore supply. Take whatever is left over as change, and enjoy finally having a little breathing room in the Colony.
