Gothic 1 Remake Guide: How To Join The New Camp
Earning a place among heavily armed mercenaries requires a calculated approach to survival, sabotage, and theft.
The New Camp operates out in the western hills of the Colony. It serves as a refuge for rogues, mercenaries, and Water Mages who want nothing to do with the strict hierarchy back in the Old Camp. If you're building a high dexterity character or aiming to eventually cast ice and chain lightning spells, you need to set up shop here. Securing official entry demands navigating a long string of specific fetch quests and orchestrated robberies.
Surviving the Western Roads
Walking into the western wilderness without a plan usually results in a quick death by local wildlife. Unarmored characters won't survive the trip alone. The most efficient strategy involves leveraging a rogue named Mordrag. You can find him loitering near the Old Camp's south gate. Pick up the Out of Sight quest from Thorus first, then ask Mordrag about his messenger work. He offers an escort. Accept it, and follow him as he clears the entire path of enemies for you. He also hands you Mordrag's Ring upon arrival, an item that proves vital for bypassing security later.
If that interaction fails, you can recruit a hunter named Drax found north of the Old Camp bridge. You just need to find his missing Hunter's Knife near a dead tree guarded by a skeleton with arrows in it. Hand him the blade, and he guides you the rest of the way.
Bypassing the Command Structure
Once inside the cavern settlement, locate Cronos the Water Mage by his purple glowing light. Buy the New Camp map from him for 37 Ore Nuggets. Navigating this multi-level cavern without it wastes too much time, so secure it early. Keep in mind that the Water Mages won't teach you their spells until Chapter 4, so focus entirely on the rogue hierarchy for now.
To get a job, you have to speak with Lares. A guard named Roscoe blocks the stairs to his office. Showing him Mordrag's Ring grants immediate access. If you missed the ring, speak to Baal Kagan at the bottom of the hill and complete his Canvassing Customers quest to earn a Charm scroll. Cast it on Roscoe to force him aside.
Lares requires proof of your utility. Handing him Mordrag's Ring works, but if you're carrying the List of Requirements from Diego's Test of Faith quest, show him that instead. Doing so unlocks a highly profitable ambush quest down the line.
The Admission Gauntlet
Lares and the local Rice Lord assign five specific tasks to test your loyalty and usefulness.
For the task A Piece of the Pie, you need to infiltrate the local tavern to offload some stolen goods. The bouncers demand a 100 Ore bribe, but equipping a Digger's Dress and claiming to be a scraper gets you in for free. Find Baal Isidro inside, buy him a rice schnapps from Silas, and lie about Baal Kagan replacing him. He panics and hands over his entire swampweed stash. Take it upstairs and sell the lot to Cipher for exactly 400 Ore. Deliver the cash straight to Lares.
The Rice Lord assigns Up to His Neck, a basic murder mystery regarding a missing foreman named Bran. Ask Malon politely for directions, then beat up a thug named Jacko in a nearby cave to learn Bran went to the tavern basement. Don't try to pick the basement door lock, as it attracts too much unwanted attention. Swim around to the back of the tavern near the pier, dive under the water, and surface inside the flooded cellar. Bran's corpse is upstairs. Grab Bran's Axe from Silas's chest as proof, confront Silas about the murder, and report back to the Rice Lord.
A Few Drops Too Much is a straightforward brawl. Silas wants you to knock out a drunk named Rayk. Put him down and tell the Rice Lord it's handled.
Something the Matter? triggers only if you showed Lares the Old Mine supply list earlier. He alters the document. You simply deliver the forged copy to Diego and report back.
Completing the forged document delivery unlocks The Raid. Head to the road connecting the Old Mine and the Old Camp to find a stuck carriage. Sneak up the ridge to find Wedge and his bandit crew waiting. Walk down to the front guard and offer to find wood to fix the wheels. This pulls his attention away, letting the bandits strike efficiently. Loot the unconscious guards, speak with Wedge, and return to Lares.
The Faction Rewards
Finishing the carriage ambush completes the Admission to the New Camp quest. Lares grants you 1500 XP and a Bandit's Dress. This permanently locks you into the faction, granting full access to their exclusive skill trainers and securing your path toward mastering Water Magic.
