Gothic 1 Remake Armor Guide: Surviving The Colony

Walking around the valley in your starting rags is a guaranteed way to end up face down in the dirt.

I learned the hard way that defense in this game is a complex math problem. Armor does not just give you a flat health boost. The system actively tracks your resistances across seven different categories: Edge, Blunt, Point, Fire, Wind, Ice, and Energy. If you walk into a cave wearing gear that only stops blunt trauma, a goblin with a rusty knife is going to cut you to ribbons. Before you panic and spend all your hard earned Ore on overpriced junk, you need a strategy. I mapped out exactly how to gear up for free, where to find the best secret equipment, and how to upgrade your faction sets.

The Early Game Hustle

When you first arrive, merchants are going to try and scam you. You have to be smart about your wallet.

Refuse The Rags

If you talk to Fisk in the Old Camp, he offers you Digger Light Trousers for 313 Ore Nuggets. Alberto in the Old Mine wants 324 for them. Do not pay these prices. Instead, take a massive detour and run all the way to the Free Mine located south of the New Camp. Look for a foreman named Swiney. Tell him you want to become a digger. He will try to brush you off, but if you keep pestering him, he eventually caves and hands you a Digger Dress for completely free. It comes with 10 Edge, 10 Blunt, and 5 Fire resistance, making it an absolute lifesaver for the opening hours.

If you are struggling to make the run to the Free Mine because you keep getting ambushed, check out my guide on finding the best early weapons so you can actually defend yourself on the road.

A Free Defensive Ring

Armor is not the only way to mitigate incoming damage. Accessories stack directly on top of your clothing stats. There is an incredibly powerful Ring of Iron Skin hiding in the northwest corner of the map. Head west of the New Camp and follow the coastline until you spot some ruined huts. You will see a pack of wolves guarding a nearby cave. Kill the wolves, head inside the cave, and loot the human corpse on the ground to claim the ring. It grants a flat 10 Edge and 10 Blunt resistance, effectively doubling the physical defense of your early game gear.

Joining A Faction

Eventually, you have to pick a side. Each of the three main camps offers a unique set of armor once you officially join their ranks.

Upgrading Your Loyalty

The Old Camp hands out the Shadow Dress, the New Camp provides the Bandit Dress, and the Swamp Camp grants you the Novice Armor. Out of the box, the Shadow Dress is arguably the most versatile for the early game. It matches the physical defense of the Digger gear but adds 2 points across all elemental categories, plus a 2 point bonus to Energy.

The real benefit of faction armor is that you can upgrade it. You can purchase belts, gloves, boots, and vests from your camp representatives to drastically alter your resistance spread based on whatever enemies you plan to fight next.

Breaking The Game Early

If you want to completely shatter the difficulty curve, there are a few heavily guarded secrets you can exploit right in Chapter 1.

The Ancient Ore Exploit

The Ancient Ore Armor is absurdly overpowered. It boasts 90 Edge and Blunt resistance, plus 15 points in every single elemental category. The developers have mentioned that getting this in Chapter 1 is unintentional and might be patched, but right now, it is completely accessible.

It is locked inside a chest in Gomez's bedroom (the first room on the left upstairs in the Old Camp castle). You need his key to open it. If your pickpocketing skill is high enough, just wait for him to stand up from his throne during the day and steal it right out of his pockets. If you prefer the stealth route, wait until almost midnight. Watch for his mistress to head to the bedroom, and walk in right behind her so the door cannot close in your face. For some bizarre reason, Gomez's AI breaks in this room and he will not attack you. You can easily knock him out, take the key, and loot the chest.

If a future patch ruins this exploit and you still want to mess around with overpowered gear, you might need to rely on the console commands mod to spawn what you need.

Mountain Fortress Gear

If you prefer a legitimate challenge, you can track down the Royal Guard Armor. It holds a massive 48 Edge and Blunt resistance. Head to the Mountain Fortress. You will have to fight or dodge a golem, and shoot down several harpies with a decent bow. You need the climbing skill to scale the outside of the main tower to grab a key. Once you have it, go up the stairs, push through the hidden fireplace entrance, climb the ladder, and jump down into the hall. Turn around into the lord's bedroom to find the locked chest holding the armor.
