Minecraft 26.3 Guide: Finding And Using Shelf Mushrooms
Finding fungi in Minecraft used to mean staring at the dirt, but the 26.3 update forces you to look up.
The upcoming autumn drop introduces the Shelf Mushroom. These unique blocks attach themselves directly to the sides of Poplar trees and fallen Poplar logs, giving your surroundings a heavily overgrown aesthetic. They completely ignore the traditional light level rules that govern standard mushroom growth. Before you waste three hours wandering aimlessly through basic biomes, you need to head straight to a Dappled Forest.
Locating the Fungi
Tracking down Shelf Mushrooms requires a specific approach. You will want to look for the vibrant orange and red leaves of the new Dappled Forest.
Searching the Forest
Walk through the biome and check the tree trunks. The mushrooms have a distinct shell shape that stands out against the bark. They spawn in small and large variations. I highly recommend targeting the larger ones because they drop two shrooms when harvested. You can break them with your bare hands or any tool. No Silk Touch enchantment is required here.
Alternative Methods
You can grow your own Poplar trees back at your base. Once fully grown, these trees have a chance to generate Shelf Mushrooms on their trunks naturally. You can also speed up the propagation process by using Bone Meal to multiply them without running back into the woods. If you hate foraging, just wait for the Wandering Trader. He will occasionally offer three Shelf Mushrooms in exchange for a single Emerald.
Practical Applications
Once your inventory is full of Shelf Mushrooms, you have plenty of options for putting them to work.
Crafting and Composting
They function perfectly as a renewable food source and an essential ingredient for brewing. If you have extra stock, you can toss them into a composter. You have a 65 percent chance to fill it by one level to produce more Bone Meal.
