Brandon Sanderson Is Finally Taking Mistborn To AAA Developers And It’s About Damn Time
Brandon Sanderson is finally shopping the Mistborn rights around to AAA developers, which means we might actually get to see Scadrial in something other than our imaginations.
I’ve spent more years than I’d like to admit trying to figure out how Allomancy would work on a controller without breaking my fingers. The concept of burning metals to fly through a soot-filled sky is a gift to game design, yet we’ve been stuck with nothing but text and empty promises for over a decade. It’s a specialized kind of torture for fans of the Cosmere, watching other franchises get mediocre adaptations while Scadrial sits in the dark. I’ve seen enough "coming soon" posters in this industry to know when to be cynical, but for once, the air feels a little different.
The State of the Scadrial
In his latest "State of the Sanderson" for 2025, Brandon dropped the news that everyone has been waiting for like a beggar waiting for a noble's scrap. He confirmed that he is finally established enough to make a high-budget game happen. The rights have been locked away in a film-rights basement for the last six or seven years, but the chains are finally off. He’s already in Step One of discussions with major players in the industry, and for once, I’m actually optimistic about the outcome.
The struggle has always been about the timing. Sanderson mentioned that he finally gets to test the market on these rights now that they aren't tied to the cinematic side of things. It’s a move that should have happened years ago, but in an industry that loves to hoard rights and do nothing with them, I’ll take what I can get.
Why This Time Isn't Just Another False Start
We’ve been burned before, and I haven't forgotten the 2012 announcement of Mistborn: Birthright. That project from Little Orbit ended up in the same place as most ambitious tie-ins: the trash. It was a painful lesson for the community, but Sanderson seems to have learned from the wreckage. He’s trying to avoid a repeat of that disaster by retaining control of the video game rights himself.
He’s putting out the call to anyone at a AAA studio or a major independent who has ever dreamed of making a Mistborn or Stormlight game. He wants to do things differently this time, and I respect the hell out of a writer who doesn't want to see his work turned into a generic mobile cash-grab. He already has interest from major players he actually likes, which is a hell of a lot better than signing a deal with the first corporate shark that circles the pier.
The Potential for a New Kind of Action RPG
Introducing gamers to the world of Scadrial could be the shot in the arm this franchise needs to go truly global. If a studio can actually nail the physics of pushing and pulling on metal, we are looking at something that could rival the best action-RPGs on the market. It’s a dark, cynical world where the sun is red and ash falls from the sky, which honestly feels like the perfect vibe for modern gaming.
I just hope whatever studio picks this up understands that a Mistborn game needs to be as punchy and direct as a pewter-enhanced headbutt. If the narrative and gameplay end up being even half as good as the source material, those who haven't touched the books are going to be in for a massive shock. It’s a brutal world with a unique magic system that is practically begging for a high-budget treatment.
As spotted by the folks at Vice, the path is finally clear for the Boogeyman of Scadrial to make his digital debut. I'll be sitting here, probably burning some copper to hide my excitement, until we get a formal announcement.
