Paralives Pregnancy Guide: Expanding Your Digital Family

Raising a digital infant is a massive commitment, so you need to understand exactly how the genetics and adoption systems function before you invite absolute chaos into your home.

Creating a fresh household in the Paramaker is fun, but eventually, you might want to expand your family naturally. Paralives gives you two distinct routes for bringing a baby into your home. You can either grind through the romantic relationship system to trigger a pregnancy, or you can bypass the biological hassle entirely and adopt. Both paths lead to a newborn that requires constant supervision, endless diaper changes, and a completely wrecked sleep schedule. Before you take the plunge, I outlined exactly how the underlying math works for both methods.

The Biological Route

Having a baby naturally takes quite a bit of setup. If you don't configure your characters correctly from the very beginning, you're locked out of this feature entirely.

Configuring the Paramaker

Before you even drop your characters into the town, you need to check their biological settings. When you're in the Paramaker, look for the three dots right next to the gender options. Clicking this opens the Advanced Personality menu. This is where you explicitly define whether a character can get pregnant or if they can impregnate others. You need one of each to make this work. If you skip this step, you can't change these settings later without resorting to console commands.

Grinding the Romance Cards

You can't just spawn a child on day one. You have to put in the work to build a deep bond with your partner. Keep grinding positive conversation cards until you trigger a "Flirty" emotion pop-up. From there, select the option to "Try to have a baby with..." your partner. The next time you talk to them, a new Together Card will appear asking if they want to try for a baby right now.

Alternatively, you can navigate the "Discuss Relationship" stack of conversation cards and ask if they want to have children in the future. If you win the chance roll, you're cleared to start trying. If you're struggling to even get a partner to like you, check out my Paralives Romance Guide to figure out the conversation math. You can also use a Storyteller card to temporarily boost your flirt success chances for 24 hours.

Taking the Test

Once both characters agree they're ready, you have to group them up. You can do this easily by shift-clicking on your partner. Click on any bed and select the "Try for a Baby" prompt. They'll get intimate under the covers. As soon as the animation finishes, click on a toilet and select "Take a pregnancy test." If the game gives you a negative result, don't panic. You can immediately send them right back to bed to try again.

Managing the Pregnancy

Once you get a positive test result, your household operates on a strict timeline. You can manipulate some of these background variables, but you can't stop the clock.

Trimesters and Odds

A standard pregnancy in Paralives lasts for exactly three in-game days, with each trimester taking up 24 hours. If you feel like that's too fast or too slow, you can manually adjust the duration in the Storyteller settings menu from the main pause screen. That same Storyteller menu also lets you tweak your baseline odds for getting pregnant in the first place, alongside your exact percentage chances of having twins or triplets.

If you're curious about how many kids you're actually having, you can send your pregnant character to any Healthcare Center in town to check for multiples.

The Delivery Process

When the three days are up, you don't need to panic or rush to the hospital. Your character gives birth right in the comfort of their own home. Once the labor finishes, a prompt pops up asking you to name the new baby and select which parent's surname they'll carry.

The Adoption Alternative

If you messed up your Paramaker settings or simply don't want to deal with a three-day pregnancy, adoption is incredibly straightforward.

Where to Go

You just need to visit a Healthcare Center on the map. You can either head to the Hospital located opposite the Community Center, or you can drop by the Pharmacy opposite the pizza place. Click on the building and select the "Adopt Baby" prompt. Your character will disappear inside for a few in-game hours before walking back out with a brand new infant.

Rolling for Genetics

The adoption system is completely randomized. The game doesn't give you a menu to pick between a boy or a girl. If you're unhappy with the random outcome, your only option is to manually save your game right before you click the building, and reload that save file until the random number generator hands you what you want.

Keeping the Newborn Alive

Once the baby is in your house, they immediately demand attention. Babies have five basic needs that you have to constantly monitor, or they'll make your life miserable.

Baby Need How to Fix It
Hunger Give them a bottle or pick the breastfeed option to fill this meter back up.
Sleep Drop the kid in a crib and they'll pass out automatically. You can also take direct control of the baby and force them to sleep.
Bathroom Keep changing their diaper proactively, or just ignore the problem until the baby officially gains the stinky status.
Hygiene This is directly tied to the bathroom meter. When they get too dirty and become stinky, drop them in the crib to access the diaper change prompt.
Affection Spend time actually playing and talking with the infant to keep their social stats from tanking.
