Battlefield Devs Respond to 'REDSEC' Review-Bomb: 'This Is Just the Beginning'

The Battlefield 6 free-to-play spin-off, REDSEC, got predictably review-bombed by the community the second it launched, and the devs are already in full damage-control mode.

It just wouldn't be a Battlefield launch without a healthy dose of fan rage. The new free-to-play REDSEC just launched, and the Battlefield 6 player base immediately review-bombed it into the digital dirt.

In a recent interview, IGN spoke with design director Justin Wiebe and creative director Thomas Andersson about the launch, the backlash, and the future. Their core message? This is all part of the plan.

'We're Always Listening'

When asked about the targeted negativity, Wiebe said the BF Studios team is "extremely passionate and proud" of REDSEC. He was quick to point out that they are "always listening."

"I mean, as soon as the game launched, we had people kind of looking at all forms of player communication, and taking notes," Wiebe told IGN. He said they're already reprioritizing fixes based on what the community is screaming about.

He even pointed to last week's update, which already addressed some of the more "problematic" challenges in Battlefield 6.

"For me, I always say, live service, you have a big clock," Wiebe explained. "Every time there's a player issue, you start the clock and you measure and value your time to the player... so that the player and the community knows that we're listening."

Of course, he immediately followed that by saying they have to weigh those quick fixes against their "future ambitions" for new content. This is, after all, "just the beginning of the experience."

The 'Ultimate Live-Service Game Mode'

Speaking of future ambitions, the devs seem all-in on "Gauntlet," the new mode the community is actually enjoying. Wiebe called it "the perfect, ultimate live-service game mode".

This mode will be the "tool in our toolbelt" for seasonal content. We're already seeing that on the Season 1 roadmap, with a new Gauntlet mission, "Rodeo," dropping on November 18, and a limited-time event called "Ice Lock Gauntlet" on December 9.

No 'Quick Cosmetic Hits'

When IGN asked about updates to the main REDSEC map, Fort Lyndon, the devs got a little cagey. But Wiebe was clear about one thing: when map changes come, they won't be half-assed.

"I want to make sure that it's additive to the player experience... That it's not just a quick cosmetic hit," he said. He wants any update to add "new fun things to explore" and "gameplay in new and meaningful ways."

Battlefield 6 and REDSEC are now fully spun up in their first season, which launched on October 28. This new normal of patching fires while building new content is just... the experience. At least they're taking notes…
