Confirmed: Eidos-Montréal Killed A 'Legacy of Kain' Reboot, And It Hurts
We knew Eidos-Montréal was having a rough time, but I didn't realize they were actively burying my childhood dreams in the process.
Yesterday, leaked resumes started floating around the internet mentioning a cancelled "Dark Fantasy ARPG" from the studio behind Deus Ex. The description mentioned melee combat, parkour, and an "established vampire IP." Naturally, everyone screamed "Legacy of Kain," but we didn't have proof.
Now we do. And it hurts.
According to a new exclusive report from Insider Gaming, that project, codenamed P16, was indeed a Legacy of Kain soft reboot.
The Reboot That Almost Was
The game was in development for about a year. Sources say it was going well. They had "barebones gameplay" running, which suggests they had nailed down the movement and the vibe.
Imagine a modern Soul Reaver with the production value of Guardians of the Galaxy. Think about Raziel shifting between realms with current-gen graphics. It sounds incredible.
So why aren't we playing it? Embracer Group.
When Embracer acquired the studio, they reportedly looked at the project and pulled the plug. The rights to the IP were shipped back to Crystal Dynamics. While Crystal Dynamics technically owns the IP now, they are currently busy trying to fix Perfect Dark and make the next Tomb Raider, so don't hold your breath for Raziel's return anytime soon.
The Studio Of Broken Dreams
The report paints a bleak picture of Eidos-Montréal. P16 isn't the only casualty. The studio has reportedly cancelled 7 or 8 projects in the last few years.
They are essentially being forced into the role of a support studio. We already know they helped on Fable (until Microsoft cut them loose) and are currently working on Grounded 2.
There is also a wild detail about Hideo Kojima. Apparently, Eidos was asked to help work on Kojima's horror game Overdose. They refused. Why? Because the developers would have been required to move to Japan. I love sushi, but relocating an entire team to another continent is a big ask.
The Money Pit
Here is the kicker. While they are cancelling cool vampire games and working on other people's sequels, Eidos-Montréal is supposedly stuck in "sunk cost" hell.
They have one massive internal project still in the works. It started development around 2019. It has had "hundreds of millions of dollars" pumped into it. Sources say it is unlikely to ever make that money back, but they have invested too much to cancel it now.
So we lost Deus Ex. We lost Legacy of Kain. And in exchange, we get a support studio trying to salvage a bloated mega-project that nobody has ever heard of.
Being an immersive sim fan in 2025 is a special kind of torture.
