TaleWorlds Co-Founder İpek Yavuz Has Died
İpek Yavuz, co-founder of TaleWorlds, the studio behind Mount & Blade, has died.
The news came by way of a post on the TaleWorlds forums by Community Manager Dejan , and it's spread quickly since. There's not a lot of detail attached to the announcement itself, just the confirmation that she's gone, but the reaction says a lot about what she helped build.
A Studio Built On One Very Specific Idea
TaleWorlds isn't a studio that chased trends. Mount & Blade, and later Warband, carved out a genre that barely existed before it and hasn't really been replicated since, a sandbox where you could be a mercenary, a lord, a bandit, or just a wandering nobody with a horse and bad decisions ahead of you.
Yavuz co-founded the studio with her husband, and the two of them built the very first Mount & Blade before TaleWorlds even had a proper development team behind it. That's worth sitting with for a second. There's no Warband without that first game, and there's no Bannerlord without either of those. Everything the series became, and everything it's still building toward, traces back to that starting point.
Even for players who never became devoted Warband fans, it was hard to miss the ambition behind it. Its systems were rough in places, but they felt handcrafted rather than manufactured, and that's part of why the game built such a loyal following.
What People Are Saying
The comments on this one are mostly quiet, the kind of quiet that comes from people trying to find the right thing to say about someone whose work shaped a chunk of their life without them ever meeting her. Many replies look back on Warband specifically, with players recalling memorable campaigns, sieges, and the countless hours they spent in Calradia. Much of the community response has simply been people sharing memories of the games she helped create.
Our thoughts are with her family and everyone at TaleWorlds.
