Marathon Credit Farming Guide: How To Get Rich And Stay Alive
Running into a warzone with empty pockets and a basic pistol is a miserable way to experience this game.
Credits are the absolute lifeblood of Marathon. Every piece of armor, every weapon attachment, and every critical upgrade requires a massive pile of cash. If you are constantly broke, you are trapped in a cycle of dropping into a raid undergeared, getting absolutely destroyed by a fully kitted squad, and returning to the lobby with nothing. I spent my first few hours entirely bankrupt because I kept making the exact same mistakes. I hoarded useless garbage, I picked fights I could not win, and I got incredibly greedy right next to the extraction point.
Getting rich in this game is not just about shooting straight. It is about understanding the underlying economy and knowing exactly when to run away. If you follow this route, stop hoarding trash, and actually manage your ammo economy properly, you will hit the credit limit faster than you think.
The Zero Risk Rook Strategy
If you just started and have absolutely nothing left in your stash, you need to play the Rook shell. The game unlocks this class for you at level three, and it is fundamentally designed to be the ultimate zero risk farming tool.
When you drop in as a Rook, the faction sponsors your loadout completely for free. You do not pay for your gear. If you die, you lose absolutely nothing from your personal vault. As you progress and unlock faction capstone upgrades, the free Rook loadout becomes genuinely terrifying. A fully upgraded Rook drops into the map with an Enhanced backpack, a WSRT Combat Shotgun, Claymores, Implants, and free medical supplies. You essentially get a premium kit handed to you just for existing.
There is a catch. You cannot complete standard contracts while playing as the Rook. You are strictly there to scavenge. However, playing this shell comes with a massive psychological advantage. The community knows that Rooks are usually broke solo players just trying to scrape by. If a heavily armed squad spots you, there is a surprisingly high chance they will just let you walk away. Some players will even drop pity loot for you. Between the free gear, the Signal Mask ability to hide your presence, and the sheer lack of financial risk, running a Rook is the absolute best way to rebuild a broken bank account.
Where The Real Money Is Hiding
If you have a decent loadout and want to pull massive paydays, you have to hit the dangerous zones. Scavenging loose change off desks in the perimeter will barely pay for your bullets.
The Dire Marsh map frequently spawns Red Flare sites. These locations are completely loaded with high value loot boxes and premium salvage. The problem is that every single player on the map can see the flare. Pushing a Red Flare site guarantees a massive PvP firefight. Do not even attempt this unless you are carrying a gun from the top of the meta weapon tier list.
If you want a slightly more predictable payout, you need to wait out the clock. During the final five minutes of a match, High Value Targets will spawn on your map. These AI bosses drop incredible loot that sells for a massive premium. Alternatively, you can trigger a guarded exfil. Activating these specific extraction points spawns a boss that you have to kill before the dropship arrives. You get the boss loot and an immediate ride out of the hot zone. Just remember that if you fail to extract before the global timer hits zero, your entire crew is wiped and you lose everything.
Upgrades And Smart Spending
Earning credits is only half the battle. If you spend your money like an idiot, you will always be broke. You need to leverage the faction system to lower your operational costs.
As I mentioned in my factions guide, completing specific contracts unlocks permanent account upgrades. You want to prioritize the CyberAcme faction as early as possible. Their upgrade tree includes Expansion, Informant, and Credit Limit boosts. Unlocking these gives you a massive economic advantage. If you play the Thief shell, prioritize the Sekiguchi faction upgrades. They buff your cooldowns, allowing you to spam your X-Ray Visor and locate high tier loot through walls much faster.
You also need to stop buying consumables directly from the armory with raw credits. It is a massive scam. You can barter for almost every essential item using the Unstable Biomass and Unstable Lead you extract from your raids. Save your raw credits for permanent weapon mods and massive inventory vault space expansions.
Equipping For Pure Profit
If you are dedicating a run entirely to farming, you need to alter your loadout to maximize your gains.
Look for the Distance Runner V3 implant. Equipping this specifically increases your loot gain multiplier, ensuring you pull more Deluxe and Superior salvage from every container you open. Just be aware that wearing loot multiplying gear makes dying hurt significantly more.
If you learn anything from my tips for new players, let it be this: greed kills. If your backpack is completely full of high value salvage and data cards, stop fighting. Do not push that random gunshot you heard in the distance. Do not try to third party a squad fight. Put your knife in your hand to sprint faster and run directly to the nearest extraction point. Loot lost in the dirt is loot you cannot sell. Get your money and get out.
