Minecraft Chaos Cubed: Surviving And Looting The New Sulfur Caves
The 26.2 Chaos Cubed update trades out standard gray cobblestone for a vibrant and surprisingly dangerous volcanic underground.
Exploring the new Sulfur Caves biome is a massive visual shift from the typical underground experience. The design takes heavy inspiration from real geothermal springs, filling the caverns with bright colors and harsh angles. I grabbed my pickaxe to see exactly what materials are available down there, and the resulting block haul is perfect for adding harsh contrasts to desert bases or alien factory builds.
Knowing exactly what you are mining helps you plan your inventory space so you don't drop something valuable by mistake.
Sulfur: This is the standard bright yellow mineral block that makes up the majority of the cave walls. You can craft it into stairs, slabs, walls, bricks, and both chiseled and polished variants.
Cinnabar: A deep volcanic red block that breaks up the bright yellow environment. It features the exact same massive crafting family as standard sulfur.
Potent Sulfur: This block features a slightly cleaner texture than standard sulfur, but it comes with a catch. When generated under water, it actively produces toxic gas and bubbles.
Sulfur Spikes: These are pointy structural blocks that decorate the cave environment. Despite looking incredibly sharp and dangerous, they deal zero contact or fall damage.
Navigating The Geothermal Hazards
Gathering all that vibrant new stone is entirely dependent on surviving the environmental traps scattered throughout the biome. My first casual walk through a shallow puddle immediately hit me with a violent Nausea effect that warped my screen.
The water in these caves is highly toxic. Those Potent Sulfur blocks hidden beneath the pools constantly vent noxious gas clouds that rise up to the surface. Stepping directly into the water or simply getting too close to the steam guarantees vision distortion. Trying to fight off the Cave Spiders and standard hostile mobs that naturally spawn here while your screen is spinning is incredibly frustrating. Staying on dry land and bridging over the pools keeps your vision clear and makes combat far more manageable.
You also need to keep a close eye out for high pressure geysers. These occur when world generation places a Potent Sulfur block directly underneath a magma block that is completely submerged in water. Stepping on one violently launches you into the air. Scanning the ceiling for overhanging stalactites is a good habit to build, as hitting your head after a geyser launch is an easy way to take massive damage.
Locating The Sulfur Caves
Finding a specific biome deep underground usually involves tedious strip mining. Thankfully, the generation logic for the Chaos Cubed update leaves some very helpful clues right on the surface of the Overworld.
Following The Surface Springs
Taking a sprint across the surface is the most organic way to track down the new biome. You want to scan the landscape for open Sulfur Springs. These are bubbling pools of water surrounded by yellow blocks, and they can generate as tiny puddles or massive lakes.
Digging straight down is usually a terrible idea in this game. This is the rare exception. Digging directly underneath a surface Sulfur Spring gives you a massive chance of breaking right through the ceiling of a sprawling subterranean Sulfur Cave. This completely removes the guesswork of tunnel digging and gets you straight into the new content.
The Command Route
If you are testing things out in a creative world or just want to skip the hiking, you can use the chat box to find the exact coordinates. Typing /locate biome minecraft:sulfur_caves forces the game to spit out the location of the nearest patch. From there, you can either walk to the coordinates or use the teleport command to drop right in.
Subterranean Discoveries
While you are carefully bridging over toxic pools and mining out the red rock, you want to keep an eye out for intersecting structures.
If you spot the wooden support beams of a traditional abandoned mineshaft cutting directly into a Sulfur Cave, you should absolutely take the time to clear it out. The chests found in these specific overlapping areas have a chance to drop the new Bounce music disc. It is a chaotic track that perfectly fits the chaotic vibe of the caves, and finding it gives you a great new tune for your base jukebox.
You should also keep your ears open for a squishy jumping sound. The Sulfur Caves are the only place you can find the new Sulfur Cube mob. They hang out in the absolute darkest corners of the biome where the light level sits at zero. These yellow passive creatures have a fascinating system of block absorption mechanics that let you modify their stats, which is completely separate mechanic that makes them a perfect addition to any mob enclosure.
