Minecraft Chaos Cubed: Surviving And Looting The New Sulfur Caves

Before you start happily mining the bright yellow blocks in the new Chaos Cubed update, I need to warn you about the toxic gas that will immediately ruin your day.

The Minecraft 26.2 update officially dropped today on June 16, bringing a massive subterranean overhaul with the Chaos Cubed release. I spent my morning tunneling into the new Sulfur Caves biome to see exactly what kind of nightmare Mojang cooked up this time. Visually, it is stunning. The game throws out the usual boring gray stone and gravel in favor of a volcanic palette inspired by real geothermal springs. But it is an absolute trap if you go in unprepared.

Here is exactly how I track down these new caves, harvest the new blocks, and avoid throwing up on my keyboard from the toxic fumes.

How To Track Down The Biome

Locating a specific underground area in a near infinite sandbox is usually an absolute headache. Luckily, the generation logic for this update leaves some incredibly obvious clues right on the surface of the Overworld.

Spotting Surface Springs

Before you waste three hours mining a random staircase to bedrock, go for a sprint across the surface. Your best bet is to scan the landscape for open Sulfur Springs. These are bubbling pools of water surrounded by yellow blocks. They generate in sizes ranging from tiny puddles to massive lakes.

The golden rule of Minecraft is usually to never dig straight down. I am telling you to break that rule. The moment you find a bubbling yellow pool on the grass, dig directly underneath it. You have a massive chance of breaking right through the ceiling of a sprawling Sulfur Cave.

The Command Route

If you are playing in a creative world or you simply have no patience for the natural grind, you can force the game to give you the coordinates. Open your chat box and type this exact string:

/locate biome minecraft:sulfur_caves

The game spits out the exact location of the nearest patch. You can either hike out there or use the teleport command to drop yourself right into the danger zone.

Surviving The Hazards

The first time I stumbled into one of these caves, I took a casual stroll through a shallow puddle to mine some red rock on the wall. My screen immediately warped, and I got hit with a violent Nausea effect.

This biome is packed with environmental traps. The water itself is highly toxic because of Potent Sulfur blocks generating beneath the pools. These blocks constantly vent noxious gas clouds that rise to the surface. Stepping in the water or getting too close to the steam guarantees vision distortion, which is incredibly dangerous considering regular hostile mobs and Cave Spiders naturally spawn in these caverns.

You also need to watch out for the geysers. If the world generation places a Potent Sulfur block underneath a magma block that is completely submerged in water, it creates a high pressure geyser. Step on one of these, and it will violently launch you into the air. Keep an eye on the ceiling to make sure you do not crack your head open on the stalactites.

The Block Haul

For the builders out there, the risk is absolutely worth the reward. The raw materials pulled out of these toxic chambers offer incredible contrast for desert builds or alien factory designs. Here is a breakdown of the materials you want to stuff into your inventory.

Sulfur	The standard bright yellow mineral block. You can craft this into stairs, slabs, walls, bricks, and chiseled or polished variants.
Cinnabar	A deep volcanic red block. It features the exact same massive crafting family as standard sulfur.
Potent Sulfur	Features a cleaner texture than standard sulfur. When placed under water, it actively generates toxic gas and bubbles.
Sulfur Spikes	Pointy structural blocks that decorate the cave. Despite looking incredibly sharp, they deal zero contact or fall damage.

The Subterranean Loot

While you are mining out the walls and trying not to get poisoned, keep your ears open. You will probably hear the squishy, jumping sound of the new Sulfur Cube mob. These yellow passive creatures exclusively spawn in the absolute darkest corners of this biome. They are a massive feature on their own, boasting a whole system of unique block-absorption mechanics that I am breaking down in a separate guide.

You also want to look out for intersecting structures. If you find a traditional abandoned mineshaft that cuts directly into a Sulfur Cave, drop everything and loot the chests. These specific overlapping chests have a chance to drop the brand new "Bounce" music disc. It is a chaotic track that perfectly fits the hopping mechanics of the new cubes, making it a mandatory pickup for your home base jukebox.
