Report: The Next Mainline 'Sonic' Game Is Coming To The Game Awards, But 'Persona' Is Sitting This One Out
If you were worried that Grand Theft Auto 6 was going to scare everyone away from The Game Awards, don't worry. The blue blur is apparently fearless.
According to a new series of tweets from reliable insider ramona (aka @p0wyful via Twitter/X), SEGA is gearing up to drop a bomb on Thursday night. While other publishers might be hiding their trailers to avoid getting crushed by Rockstar's shadow, Team Sonic is reportedly "confident" in their next mainline project.
This isn't just a Sonic Rumble update or a movie tie-in. This is the big one.
The Sonic Confidence
Ramona’s leak is specific. They state that the next mainline Sonic project will be shown.
"The only way I can see them not showing it off is if they are genuinely fearful of GTA 6, which I do not think they are."
This tracks with the development timeline. Sonic Frontiers launched in late 2022. Pre-production on the next title reportedly started around that time or early 2023. Since they are likely iterating on the "Open Zone" engine rather than building from scratch, a reveal now makes perfect sense.
The leak suggests the model changes are "fairly large," which implies a significant visual upgrade. Whether that means a CGI teaser or actual gameplay remains to be seen, but given the development time, a proper trailer isn't out of the question.
The Persona Disappointment
Now for the bad news. If you are an Atlus fan, you might want to lower your expectations.
The same leaker claims that Persona 6 will NOT be at The Game Awards. Despite the rumors swirling around the series' 30th anniversary, it seems Atlus is holding their cards close to their chest.
What about the rumored Persona 4 Remake (often called Persona 4 Revival)? Also likely a no-show. Ramona believes it "needs another month or so," meaning we might see it at a dedicated event or a Nintendo Direct early next year.
The only Persona content we might get is a trailer for Persona 5: The Phantom X (the mobile game), which is the gaming equivalent of getting socks for Christmas when you asked for a PS5.
the Year of the Hedgehog
Thursday is shaping up to be a massive night for SEGA, but only if you like hedgehogs.
If this leak holds true, we are about to see the next evolution of the Frontiers formula. Considering Sonic 3 (the movie) hits theaters in a few weeks, the synergy is too perfect to ignore. SEGA wants next year to be the Year of the Hedgehog, and it starts with Geoff Keighley.
Just don't expect Joker or Yu Narukami to join the party.
