Subliminal Episode 1 Endings Guide: Escaping The Nightmare

Escaping the psychological meat grinder of Caleb's mind requires a lot more than just running away from the things hiding in the dark.

A first-person view of a colorful multi-lane slide inside a liminal indoor soft play area from the horror game Subliminal.

Navigating the liminal spaces of this game is already a deeply uncomfortable experience, but trying to untangle the specific triggers for the alternate endings is pure agony. The architecture actively shifts around you, and a single wrong turn can lock you out of the conclusion you are actually aiming for. You are not just solving puzzles. You are manipulating the environment while a hostile entity stalks you through empty play areas and flooded basements.

Most people will naturally stumble their way into the canon ending through sheer trial and error. But if you want to see everything Episode 1 has to offer, you have to intentionally break from the intended path. I spent way too much time testing these routes so you do not have to wander the halls blindly. If you are also hunting for secrets while doing these runs, I highly recommend keeping my Subliminal: All 6 Collectible Locations Guide open in another tab to save yourself some backtracking.

The Episode 1 Ending Triggers

There are four recognized endings in the current build of the game, though one remains highly elusive. Unlocking them requires you to make very specific choices during the branching paths of the Playplace and WaterWorks levels.

The Endings Checklist

A quick reference sheet for the core requirement of each conclusion.

Ending Name Core Requirement
Memory Disposal (Canon) Reach the Bounce House, survive the broken environment, and trigger the final Smile chase.
Arcade Requires two separate Playplace path runs to claim tickets and deposit them in the Maintenance Tunnels.
Erase Find and pull the hidden Erase switches hidden in the Basement and WaterWorks.
Basement Challenge (Rot) Currently incomplete. The exact steps are still being mapped out by the community.

The Canon Route: Memory Disposal

This is the definitive, developer intended conclusion. To get here, you just need to take any path that ultimately drops you into the Bounce House section.

Once you unlock the Bounce House door with your keycard, follow the linear path until the environment literally starts breaking apart around you. Pick up your broken Memory Meter from the ground and keep moving until your route is blocked. The game will force you into a new room and make you re-route. Pull the switch, approach the chute, and head up the stairs to start the final puzzle gauntlet.

The Toy Car Code

You will find yourself in a room with a rug covered in toy cars and some vague posters on the walls. The cars are strictly ordered by color: Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow. You need to count the exact number of cars for each specific color to get the padlock code.

There are 7 Red cars, 5 Blue cars, 9 Green cars, and 4 Yellow cars. Punch the code 7594 into the lock to grab the light source you need to manipulate the gates in the next room.

The Final Chase

Once you solve the sensor bar puzzle to clear the rubble, squeeze through the tight gap until you enter a stark red area. Look for the highlighted red section on the conveyor belt and pull it. This immediately triggers the final, massive chase sequence with the entity. Run for your life, do not look back, and you will secure the canon ending.

The Arcade Route: Beating The High Score

This ending is incredibly tedious because it forces you to manipulate the branching paths of the Playplace across two entirely separate steps.

Step One: The Focus Path

First, you need to reach the Playplace and intentionally take the Focus path. This means staring directly at Smile to initiate a chase sequence. Survive the chase to enter Childhood Memories Part 3.

Do not follow the normal route here. Before you even retrieve the light from the yellow slide, stray off the path to find the Memory Lane arcade machine. Grab the token resting near the bottom of the screen, insert it, and play the minigame until you beat the high score of 2018. Collect your prize tickets from the dispenser and eject from the level.

Step Two: The Avert Path

Now you have to play through the Playplace area all over again. This time, take the Avert path by refusing to look at Smile. This alternate route drops you into the Maintenance Tunnels.

Navigate the tunnels until you locate the very first open gate sitting next to a red sensor bar. You will find a Ticket Station terminal waiting for you here. Insert the tickets you earned during your previous run to trigger the Arcade ending.

The Erase Route: Breaking The Simulation

This is arguably the most unsettling conclusion because it feels like you are actively breaking the game logic. You have to hunt down highly missable Erase switches hidden in the early levels.

The Basement Switch

During the very first level, you will survive the stressful door and light management test. The game naturally prompts you to proceed through a newly opened door near the stairs. Ignore it completely. Walk upstairs instead and go through the incredibly ominous looking door. You will find an Erase switch inside. Pull it and continue your run.

The WaterWorks Switch

Play through the WaterWorks level until you finish riding the main water slide for the first time. As soon as you exit the slide, turn hard to your left. You will spot another Erase switch waiting in the corner. Pulling this switch finalizes the sequence and triggers the grim consequences of the Erase ending.

The Rot Ending: The Basement Challenge

I am including this strictly for the sake of thoroughness, but I actually haven't achieved this ending yet, so this is a small WIP.

Credit to streetle and their puzzle guide on Steam, as it helped me achieve one of the endings I was hopelessly stuck on! I will update this specific section the second I figure out the exact sequence of events required to properly trigger this conclusion.
