The Desert Statue Mystery Deepens: It Isn't 'Lords of the Fallen 2'

The list of suspects for Geoff Keighley's weird desert art project just got shorter, and we are running out of options.

For the past week, the internet has been trying to decipher the meaning behind a creepy, demon-filled statue that appeared in the middle of the Mojave Desert. It was teased by Geoff Keighley himself, so we know it is tied to a major reveal at The Game Awards next week.

Because the statue looks like a pile of skeletons and demons, many assumed it was marketing for Lords of the Fallen 2 (or just "Lords II," as they are calling it). It fit the aesthetic perfectly.

But today, Marek Tyminski, the CEO of CI Games, killed that dream.

The Denial

Taking to Twitter/X, Tyminski shut down the speculation completely.

"Flattered so many think we’re behind that statue," he wrote. "Can confirm it’s not us, we’re just as hyped as you are."

He went on to say that his developers are "praying it’s something FROM [Software]," which is hilarious because that is exactly what the rest of us are doing.

He did tease that "big news" is coming for the franchise soon, but it clearly has nothing to do with the pile of bones in California.

Who Is Left?

With Lords of the Fallen out, Diablo 4 debunked by Jason Schreier, and God of War denied by Cory Barlog, the list of candidates is shrinking fast.

Here is where we stand:

  • The "FromSoftware" Theory: The statue has a very Dark Souls / Elden Ring vibe. Could it be related to a new IP or Bloodborne? (Stop laughing).

  • The "New IP" Theory: Jason Schreier hinted that the reveal is for a "very cool" game that many people will be happy about. This often implies a fresh AAA title from a major studio.

  • The "Legacy of Kain" Theory: Okay, hear me out. The statue has skeletons. Soul Reaver has skeletons. Eidos cancelled their reboot, but maybe Crystal Dynamics revived it? (I am reaching, I know).

Whatever it is, Geoff Keighley has managed to get us staring at a rock in the desert for a week straight. The man knows how to market.

Tune in on December 11th to find out if it was worth the sunburn.
