WB Wants Jack Black to Win an Oscar for Minecraft? Bless Their Hearts.

Apparently, making almost a billion dollars isn't enough; now they want the little gold statues too.

Well, here's something I didn't have on my 2025 bingo card. Warner Bros. has officially kicked off its Oscar campaign, and right alongside heavyweight dramas like Superman and Mickey 17, they're seriously pushing... A Minecraft Movie.

Yeah, they've launched the whole "For Your Consideration" website for the film, laying out all the categories they believe their blocky blockbuster deserves.

Jack Black for Best Actor? Really?

They aren't just aiming for the technical awards, oh no. WB is going for the big ones. We're talking Best Picture, Best Director for Jared Hess, and the one that made me blink: Best Actor for Jack Black as Steve.

They also think Jason Momoa and Sebastian Hansen deserve Supporting Actor nods, while Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge are up for Supporting Actress. It's quite the list.

Covering All the Bases (Just in Case)

Naturally, they're hedging their bets by throwing Minecraft into literally every other conceivable category too. Best Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Costumes, Makeup, Sound, Visual Effects, Score, Original Songs... the list goes on. If there was an award for "Best Use of Cubes," they'd be pushing for that too.

It's About Money, Not Just Statues

Now, before you lose your mind, remember this is standard operating procedure for major studios. They pour money into these "For Your Consideration" campaigns every year. It's less about actually winning Best Picture (let's be real) and more about keeping the movie in the conversation.

It drives buzz, gets Academy members to rewatch it, and maybe convinces some folks who missed it in theaters to check it out now that it's streaming or on home video. It's marketing, plain and simple.

Can't Argue With Almost a Billion Bucks

And you can't entirely blame WB. The movie made over $950 million worldwide. That's insane money. It's the second biggest video game movie ever, only behind whatever Mario pulled in.

It’s apparently the 69th (nice) highest-grossing film of all time. When you make that kind of bank, I guess you feel entitled to swing for the fences, even if the fences are guarded by Oscar voters.

So, will Jack Black be thanking the Academy next March? Probably not. But Warner Bros. is going to spend a fortune trying, and honestly, good for them. With a sequel already greenlit for 2027 with Hess returning, this campaign is just part of keeping the blocky hype train rolling. Maybe Alex will get a Best Actress push next time.
