Wolfenstein 3 Is Real And It Is About Damn Time
It looks like B.J. Blazkowicz isn't done stomping fascism into the dirt just yet.
I have been waiting for this news since the credits rolled on The New Colossus. After a long detour involving a certain whip-cracking archaeologist, it seems MachineGames is finally returning to what they do best. According to a report by the folks at Kotaku (and corroborated by Jez Corden over at Windows Central), Wolfenstein 3 is officially in the works. This isn't just a rumor floating around a Discord server; this is coming from sources who know their stuff.
MachineGames Returns To Its Roots
The studio has been busy lately. They absolutely crushed it with Indiana Jones and the Great Circle back in 2024, proving they can handle more than just dual-wielding shotguns. But for me, MachineGames will always be the house that B.J. built.
There was a genuine fear that Wolfenstein was dead in the water. We had Wolfenstein: Youngblood in 2019, and let's be honest with each other here, it was a bit of a mess. It felt aimless, the RPG mechanics were annoying, and it just didn't hit that visceral high of the main line games. I was worried that the lackluster reception to that spinoff might have scared Bethesda off. Thankfully, it looks like they are ready to give the main series the conclusion it deserves.
Why We Need This Now
Bethesda is approaching its 40th anniversary, and the timing feels deliberate. We have seen the success of the Fallout TV show, and there are whispers of a Wolfenstein series in the pipeline for Amazon Prime. It makes sense to have a flagship game ready to capitalize on that hype.
But corporate synergy aside, I just miss this specific brand of shooter. The New Order and The New Colossus weren't just "good" games. They were narrative powerhouses that managed to balance absolute absurdity with genuinely touching character moments. And then they let you vaporize a Nazi with a laser cannon. It is a delicate balance that very few developers get right.
The Legacy of Blazkowicz
If you look back at the history of this franchise, it is wild. It started on the Apple II in the 80s, invented the FPS genre with id Software in the 90s, and then went through a weird identity crisis in the 2000s. It wasn't until MachineGames took over that the series found its soul again.
They turned a 2D sprite of a guy looking for a keycard into a nuanced, tired, and brutal soldier fighting an impossible war. I want to see how this trilogy ends. I want to see Mecha-Hitler (again). But mostly, I just want the catharsis of running through a steel corridor with a heavy machine gun, knowing that I am the only thing standing between the world and total darkness.
There is no release date yet, obviously. But just knowing it is coming is enough to keep me going.
