Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag Resynced Complete New Content Unlock Guide

Sailing back into the golden age of piracy feels entirely different when the Caribbean is packed with hours of fresh additions.

The glossy coat of paint on this remake is great, but the real draw is the staggering amount of new stuff to track down. I've already spent hours digging through the updated mechanics, and you can easily lose yourself if you don't know what unlocks when. The developers packed in around six hours of fresh narrative-driven content, dropped completely new islands into the sea, and totally overhauled how Edward fights on land and water. Before you go blindly sailing into the horizon, use my breakdown to find exactly where the new quests, hidden upgrades, and furry companions are waiting.

Core Gameplay Overhauls

The mechanical updates completely change how you approach everyday piracy. The traditional land combat feels much closer to modern entries in the series, but they also stripped away a few old habits. For starters, you can't pick up enemy weapons anymore, and your trusty hidden blades are now strictly reserved for flashy finishers.

If you want to survive the new blunderbuss-wielding enemies that love to ruin your day, you'll need to master the updated mechanics. You can hold down the attack button to unleash devastating Heavy Strikes, or time your deflections perfectly to trigger lethal chain takedowns. I highly recommend looking over my AC Black Flag Resynced advanced combat guide if you want to get the timing down before picking fights with heavy guards.

Stealth is also infinitely more forgiving now. Pressing X lets you crouch anywhere, and a handy visibility meter tells you exactly how close you are to getting spotted. Best of all, getting spotted no longer triggers an automatic fail state during stealth missions. It turns out you can actually fight your way out of a bad situation, which saved my neck more times than I care to admit. You'll also find unique stat buffs through the new equipable Trinkets. For instance, collecting every single Mayan Stone doesn't just grant you the classic armor anymore, it now hands you a Trinket that literally absorbs incoming gunfire.

Naval Combat and Upgrades

The Jackdaw received some massive upgrades that completely change how you dismantle enemy lines. You can now manually aim your swivel guns to pick off structural weak spots. Even better, clearing out the enemy strongholds across the map now unlocks unique secondary firing modes for your ship artillery. If you haven't started hunting down those bases yet, make sure to use my AC Black Flag Resynced fort locations guide to track down every fortress icon.

The legendary ships are back, and they're tougher than before. Don't stress about them too much early on, because they actually respawn over time now. In the original game, sinking those monstrosities was the only way to get the ram ability. In the remake, you can secure that exact ram along with double broadside shots and enhanced bracing by finishing the brand-new naval officer questlines.

Jackdaw Weapon New Secondary Firing Mode
Broadside Cannons Continuous Heated Shots
Bowchasers Double Shot
Fire Barrels Shrapnel Barrels
Mortar Deadman's Cohort (Fires a continuous stream)

Chronological Unlock Guide

The game drops its new content across specific narrative milestones. Keep in mind that outfit requirements have shifted, treasure maps are tweaked, and ship blueprints are now officially called Ultimate Plans. Here's exactly when you can start accessing the new activities as you progress through the main campaign.

Sequence 3 Unlocks

During the mission Sugarcane and Its Yields, you'll finally unlock the Rope Dart. This is easily the most satisfying tool in Edward's kit. It operates on a standard cooldown, but it lets you drag distant enemies directly into your blade or yank them up to dangle from nearby rafters.

Sequence 4 Unlocks

Finishing the mission This Old Cove opens up the floodgates for new content. Once you secure the base at Great Inagua, a massive wave of activities will hit your map all at once.

  • Art Lover Side Quest: Talk to the butler, Bernard, at the Great Inagua manor. He'll task you with hunting down lost art pieces to restore the property's collection.

  • A Proper Shipwright: Head to the west side of the map to start this officer quest. Completing Lucy Baldwin's storyline recruits her to your crew, unlocks unique ship abilities, and rewards you with a great pair of pistols.

  • A Second Chance: Look to the southeast to find the Padre's officer quest. Just like Lucy, finishing his path grants special ship perks and another set of pistols.

  • Narrative Rifts and Animus Projects: These are short story activities focused entirely on the heavy choices Edward makes. The first one pops up on the southern coast of Great Inagua right after you finish the sequence intro. Completing them lets you gather Data Fragments for Animus Projects, which unlock fresh gear and cosmetics.

  • New Pet Companions: You can now recruit two specific pets that will happily lounge on your ship's railing while you cruise around. To find Soot the Cat, look for the Cat Distribution System event marker in Great Inagua. If you prefer a monkey, look for the Monkey Business event marker located off the shore of southeast Havana, right on a ship.

The open world itself expands during this sequence. Loading screens are drastically reduced while sailing between islands, more underwater chests are hidden away outside of standard shipwreck events, and you can track down a few brand new sea shanties to keep your crew from getting bored.

Sequence 8 Unlocks

Two major character epilogues become available during this stretch of the story. If you're trying to gauge exactly how far along you are in the grand scheme of things, you can always check our full AC Black Flag Resynced mission list to see how many sequences are left.

  • Blackbeard's Treasure: This activates automatically right after you finish Do Not Go Gently. Reading his map kicks off a dedicated treasure hunt that serves as an emotional epilogue for Ed Thatch.

  • Captain Stede Bonnet: Once you wrap up the brutal mission Marooned, head back to the Great Inagua manor. You'll find a quest marker that dives straight into the final chapters of our favorite merchant turned pirate. Finishing his content also unlocks a few extra sea shanties.

Sequence 11 Unlocks

The absolute biggest piece of new content is held back until the final stages of the game. Once you finish Everything is Permitted and exit the Assassin's Compound with Anne, walk over to the Great Inagua tavern. You'll see a new marker called That Bastard Maynard.

Accepting this kicks off A World Without Gold, which is a massive narrative endgame chapter tracking Edward's hunt for the notorious pirate hunter Robert Maynard. This chapter also seamlessly introduces you to the third naval officer, Tobias Smith. Completing his introductory mission, I Just Want to Talk, lets you officially recruit him.

From there, his personal questline, No Box Dark Enough, will unlock back at Great Inagua. Finishing his specific chain of missions is exactly how you unlock the devastating Deadman's Cohort firing mode for your mortars, giving you the ultimate tool for clearing out whatever remaining threats are left in the Caribbean.
