Code Vein 2 Combat Guide: How To Stop Dying And Start Assimilating
Code Vein 2 is finally here, and if you thought you could just button-mash your way through the apocalypse like it's 2019, you are in for a rude awakening.
The developers have overhauled nearly everything. We have a new "Formae" system that replaces the old Gifts, a partner mechanics that let you physically merge with your anime waifu/husbando, and a resource economy that punishes you for being passive. It is faster, deeper, and frankly, a lot more punishing.
I have spent the last few days dying over and over again and reading every tooltip so you don't have to. Here is the definitive guide to mastering the blood-soaked ballet of Code Vein 2.
THE CORE LOOP: BLEED, DRAIN, DESTROY
Forget stamina management for a second. The real heartbeat of Code Vein 2 is the Ichor Cycle.
Wound (Attack): Hitting enemies with your weapon builds up "wounds" on their bodies.
Drain (Revenant Action): Once they are wounded, use your Jail Drain attack. This deals massive damage and rips Ichor (mana) out of them.
Spend (Formae): Use that Ichor to cast powerful skills called Formae.
If you try to play this like Dark Souls—hit, roll, hit, roll—you will run out of resources. You must be aggressive. You need to wound enemies so you can drain them, so you can keep casting your big spells. It is a hungry playstyle.
UNDERSTANDING FORMAE (THE NEW SKILLS)
Gifts are gone. Now we have Formae, and they come in three distinct flavors. You can't just slap whatever you want onto a build anymore; you have to think about your loadout.
1. Weapon Formae These are skills directly attached to your weapon (up to four slots).
Combat Formae: Flashy melee attacks that extend combos.
Magic Formae: Long-range projectiles for when you're too scared to get close.
Support Formae: Buffs that keep you alive.
2. Bequeathed Formae This is the cool stuff. These summon a unique "phantom" weapon for a single, devastating strike.
Example: Summoning a massive greatsword that dwarfs your character to land a finishing blow. It takes time to wind up, but it hits like a truck.
3. Defensive Formae This is your "Get Out of Jail Free" card. You equip one action: a Guard, a Counter, or a Special Evade. Choose wisely based on the boss you are fighting.
THE PARTNER SYSTEM: SUMMON OR ASSIMILATE?
Your partner isn't just an extra damage source anymore. You have to actively manage them using Link Points (LP) (the blue bar).
Summon Mode: Your partner fights beside you. They draw aggro, deal damage, and perform their own Drain Attacks (which give you Ichor). This is your default state.
Assimilation Mode: You literally store your partner in the jail on your back. They stop fighting, but you gain massive stat boosts.
Pro Tip: Use Summon for groups of enemies to split their attention. Use Assimilation for 1v1 duels against bosses where you need raw stats to survive the trade.
Link Traits Every partner gives you a passive buff called a Link Trait, but it only works if your LP (Blue Health) is high enough.
Important: When you take damage, you lose LP first. If your LP hits zero, you lose the buff.
Healing: Potions restore HP (Yellow) first. Only the "overflow" healing restores your LP. This means you need to keep your health topped off if you want to keep your partner buffs active.
ADVANCED PARTNER TACTICS
Choosing the right partner is half the battle. Here are a few standout strategies I found:
The "Glass Cannon" Mage: Pair with Valentin. His "Forma Prowess" boosts cast speed, and his Link Trait lets you cast using your own HP. You become a machine gun of magic spells, but one hit will kill you.
The "Tank & Spank": Pair with Zenon (Halberd user). His Link Trait makes Perfect Guards and Parries easier and more rewarding. If you like playing defensively, he is your best friend.
The "Elementalist": Pair with Lycoris. Her "Bridge of Glory" buffs your attack based on your Mind stat. If you are running an elemental build, she skyrockets your damage output.
Combat in Code Vein 2 is about synergy. Don't just pick the partner who looks the coolest (though fashion is important). Pick the one whose Link Trait covers your weakness. If you suck at dodging, take Lou for the Ichor recovery. If you run out of stamina constantly, take Noah for the reduction buff.
Now get out there and start draining some hearts.
