Crimson Desert Camp Guide: Rebuilding the Greymane Clan
You cannot run a mercenary company out of a muddy sleeping bag. It is time to build a proper base.
Crimson Desert drops Kliff into the world with absolutely nothing. His clan is dead or scattered, and he is sleeping in the dirt. However, as you push through the main story, you eventually earn the right to establish a permanent base of operations for the Greymanes.
Managing this camp is not just a neat little side activity. It is the core of your passive economy. Your camp is where you refine ore, buy bulk ammunition, cook high-tier meals, and hoard your loot. If you are struggling to keep your pockets full, you need to read my money farming guide and start funneling those funds directly into your camp's infrastructure.
How to Establish the Greymane Camp
You will not even hear about the camp until you clear Chapter 2. After you inevitably beat down the Hornsplitter boss, you will start Chapter 3 by running into Marius, a surviving Greymane.
Marius spreads the word of your return, which catches the attention of the Marquis of House Serkis. As a reward for your exploits, he grants you a plot of land to start rebuilding. You have to follow his guardsman south of Hernand Town to the top of Howling Hill. This triggers the "First Step to Rebuilding" and "A Fresh Start" quests. Completing these officially erects the basic Greymane Camp.
As a massive bonus, establishing the camp also unlocks Damiane Spencer as a playable character. If you are confused about how the character swapping actually works, my guide on how to unlock Damiane and Oongka breaks down the roster system.
Unlocking the Core Camp Features
When you first arrive, the camp is pathetic. You have a few tents and two guys standing around. To actually make the camp functional, you have to push the main story through Chapter 3 and face the Reed Devil.
Carl's Support Camp Resources
Once the Reed Devil is dealt with, you unlock Carl's support window. Carl is your quartermaster. He accepts donations of practically any item in the game—armor, weapons, raw timber, food, and raw coin.
Do not expect an immediate return on investment here. Donating to Carl translates your garbage loot into "Camp Currency," which is used entirely to fund Dispatch Missions. If you have fifty useless rusty swords clogging up your inventory, give them to Carl so your mercenaries have the funds to actually go out and work.
Ross and Camp Missions
After completing the "Rumors from the Sawmill" quest, check the shrine in your camp to read a letter from Shakatu. This unlocks the Howling Hills Camp Expansion and gives you access to Ross's Freesword Management Office.
Ross is the guy you talk to when you want to put your recruits to work. You can assign your available Greymanes to automated dispatch missions across the map. These missions run on real-time background timers and bring in massive hauls of raw resources, money, and food.
If you do not want to run all the way back to Ross to manage your teams, you can handle it directly from the map. Open your map, hover over the Greymane camp icon (the three tents), hit the "Inspect" button, and tab over to "Missions."
Understanding Dispatch Missions
Missions are the lifeblood of your camp. However, they cost resources to start. If you send a team out to secure a stronghold, they will demand food and money before they leave.
You need to balance your active missions. Do not send every single recruit on expensive security missions, or you will completely drain your food reserves. Always have at least one team actively running a Food Harvest (Grain) or Ranching (Cow) mission to passively replenish the supplies your combat teams are burning through.
Recruiting Your Comrades
You cannot run missions if you do not have the manpower. Unlocking new Greymane recruits requires completing their specific side quests out in the world.
Some recruits, like Luke and Ronald, are just generic workers with basic skills like Novice Logger or Skilled Rancher. Other recruits, however, unlock entirely new storefronts and facilities within the camp itself.
Ronnie (The Cook): Unlocked via "Embers of Return: A Rumor at Glenbright Farm." He sets up the cooking station, sells bulk ingredients, and offers daily prepared meals.
Tranan (The Quartermaster): Unlocked via the same Glenbright Farm quest. He acts as your local blacksmith, buying your junk gear and selling crucial refinement items and ammunition.
Brice (The Wagonmaster): Unlocked via the Glenbright Farm quest. Once he is at the camp, you can finally run Engineering missions to craft the Pywel Wagon, allowing you to establish profitable trade routes.
Expanding and Upgrading the Camp
Your camp will eventually hit a progression wall. To upgrade it to Level Two, you must push the "Embers of Return" faction questline.
You need to track down specific NPCs across the map to trigger these quests. Talk to Otto, Silvan, Aldric, and Fritz. The seventh and final quest in this chain is literally called "Expanding the Camp." Finishing it unlocks the second tier of your base, giving you access to the Private Storage Chest (which holds 230 items) and the ability to reclaim lost loot from Carl if you died in the field and forgot to pick your gear back up.
