Deltarune Chapter 5 Guide: Surviving the Weird Route
Before you accidentally overwrite your 20-hour pacifist run with a psychological horror show, you need to know exactly what this forbidden path demands.
Toby Fox completely unhinged the narrative in Chapter 5. If you stick to the normal path, you spend your time enjoying a lovely town festival with Susie before tackling the flower shop Dark World. If you choose the Weird Route, you spend your time slowly marching into a lake to drown with Noelle. It is a massive tonal shift that fundamentally breaks the game.
Unlike previous chapters, this alternate path starts the second you wake up and completely skips the Dark World segment. Because you never enter the Dark World, you are locked out of all the hidden collectibles and optional encounters. If you want to hunt down currency or fight the hidden boss, check out my Deltarune Chapter 5 Guide: All 19 Pink Coin Locations on a normal save file instead.
Triggering the Lake Sequence
You cannot just decide to be evil in Chapter 5 and expect things to work. This path requires a very specific setup inherited from your previous choices.
The game fights you immediately. Kris moves incredibly slowly and resists your directional inputs the moment they get out of bed. All dialogue boxes not spoken by another character are totally blank. You sleep right through the festival, and everyone is already gone by the time you step outside.
Getting the Bread from Sans is mandatory. If you try to skip straight to the lake, Susie stops you and mentions Noelle wanting ice cream. Interestingly, the Bread is the only interactive item in your inventory, and its description notes that it leaves a trail. It also heavily implies this is the exact same Sans from Undertale, gathering breadcrumbs for his hidden workshop.
The Power of Proceed
Once you enter the lake area, Noelle delivers a chilling monologue. She talks about breaking free from her routine and doing something crazy. You get 8 different choice prompts here. It actually does not matter if you pick "Stop" or "Proceed" during this dialogue phase, but the game secretly tracks every time you try to resist. If you tell her to stop, Noelle forces you to proceed anyway. She is fully in control now.
The two of you hold hands and walk directly into the water. As you submerge, the screen starts shaking violently. The textbox borders bleed red, and Noelle's character portrait distorts into something that looks genuinely demonic.
This triggers a hidden timer minigame. You will be spammed with roughly 70 choice prompts. You have to select "Proceed" every single time before the timer expires. Every time you click it, the timer resets, but the window gets shorter and shorter. You start with 8 seconds to react, and by the end, you only have 1 second. The screen fades to white and the static pitches up to an unbearable squeal the closer you get to failing.
What Happens if You Fail?
If you miss a prompt or intentionally let the timer expire, the screen completely whites out. Noelle realizes you hesitated and says that Kris has not changed after all.
This aborts the Weird Route, but it does not just kick you to a game over screen. Instead, the game dumps you directly into the normal Dark World route, skipping the entire light world intro segment. Characters will have slightly different dialogue acknowledging the shift, and the internal code triggers a unique flag. It is a brilliant failsafe that punishes your hesitation by forcing you back onto the very path Noelle was trying to escape.
Side B and the Chapter 7 Enigma
If you successfully mash "Proceed" through all 70 prompts, the screen cuts to black. A retro CRT monitor pops up with a single, horrifying instruction: "Insert Chapter 7 Side B."
The game immediately boots you back to the file select screen. Your save file will now have a "_B" appended to the end of it. Because there are zero save points in this version of Chapter 5, this is the definitive end of the route. You essentially broke the game so hard that you skipped Chapter 6 entirely.
This confirms what the community has been theorizing since Chapter 2. The Weird Route is not just about making evil choices. It is a meta narrative about breaking the prophecy and escaping the intended sequence of the game. Noelle realizes she is trapped on a set path, and she decides that drowning herself and her best friend is a better alternative than following the script. You helped her push past the biological limits of drowning just to see what happens next. Now you have to wait for Chapter 7 to find out exactly what kind of monster you just created.
