Directive 8020 Guide: How To Manipulate Traits And Lock Every Character Destiny

Before you accidentally doom your entire crew to a horrifying alien death, you need to understand how your seemingly innocent dialogue choices lock in their final destinies.

A cinematic close-up of character Brianna Young behind a moisture-slicked glass pane in the sci-fi horror game Directive 8020.

Crash landing on Tau Ceti f turns into a nightmare immediately. You quickly realize the alien organism mimicking your crew is only half the problem. The real threat is poor decision-making. Every major playable character on the Cassiopeia has two distinct destinies. The game constantly tracks your conversational choices, tweaking invisible background stats until it permanently locks a character into a specific narrative path. Pick what sounds funny in a panic, and you might trap your favorite crewmate in a horrific situation. I put together a breakdown of exactly how these traits work and what you need to say to get the endings you actually want.

Keep in mind you never directly control Pari Simms, Noah Mitchell, Zoe Anders, or LaMarcus Williams. Since they act strictly as NPCs, they lack personal destinies to unlock. Focus entirely on the core playable roster.

The Trait And Comms System

You cannot bend the story to your will if you do not understand the underlying math governing your crew.

Every time you face a dialogue option, your choice alters at least one personality trait. A "Traits Altered" notification pops up in the top left corner of your screen as a warning. Open your Crew menu immediately when you see it. An arrow will indicate exactly which stat just moved. The game continuously calculates these numbers in the background. When a character reaches a specific narrative turning point, the system checks which of their two primary traits is higher and permanently assigns their destiny based on that math.

While the main cutscenes provide the biggest stat shifts, you leave free points on the table by ignoring your comms device. Your crew routinely texts each other between major story beats. Some of these messages advance the main plot, but you also get optional prompts to text characters currently off-screen. Always take these opportunities. Answering a simple text message provides a free trait boost that can easily push your stats over the edge right before a major destiny lock.

Early Game Destiny Locks

Some characters seal their fate incredibly early in the timeline. You get very little room for error with this first batch of crewmates.

Carter

Carter serves as your brutal tutorial for this entire mechanic. You cannot save him. He dies no matter what you do, but you still control how his final moments play out during the hull breach in episode one. Boost his Cautious trait and he becomes The Caretaker, focusing on the future. Raise his Caring trait and he becomes The Fixer, focusing entirely on the present.

Nolan Stafford

Nolan Stafford is the first true survivor you need to worry about. His destiny locks incredibly early during episode three. Supermassive Games locked him in early because he can actually be killed off in that exact same episode. Consistently choose Supportive dialogue, particularly when talking to Young or Eisele, and Nolan becomes The Father. Lean into his Resolute trait and take a hardline approach when addressing the group to lock him in as The Commander. Once his fate is sealed, play him however you want for the rest of the game assuming you keep him alive.

Samantha Cooper

Samantha Cooper meets her turning point during episode five when debating with Anders about drugging Williams. You have plenty of time to shape her personality before this moment. Keep her Professional and serious during emergencies to lock her in as The Medic. It is much easier to boost her Playful trait by joking around with the crew, which inevitably turns her into The Rogue.

The Endgame Destinies

The remaining crew members do not face their defining moments until the absolute final hours of the nightmare.

Briana Young

Briana Young is the emotional core of the mission, and her destiny locks at the very start of episode eight during a conversation with Stafford. There is no single magic dialogue choice here. It relies entirely on how you played her across the entire campaign. Keep her Loyal to her comrades and help them evade danger to make her The Hero. This path features an extra narrative branch involving a wish on her father's birthday candles. Keep her Serious and prioritize the mission over human lives, and she becomes The Pragmatist.

Josef Cernan

Josef Cernan also locks his fate at the start of episode eight, right after a massive plot reveal. To make Cernan The Philosopher, openly discuss his lost husband. You get a major opportunity to do this while talking to Cooper in episode three. If you prefer him Focused, deflect any personal questions and act brave during group chats. The Focused version of Cernan is undeniably colder, but he refuses to let his past define his current survival.

Laura Eisele

Laura Eisele is the ultimate wildcard because her destiny does not trigger until the post-credits scene. You have the entire game to shape her worldview. Build her Sympathetic trait by comforting the crew and offering emotional support to unlock The Humanitarian ending. Strip away her empathy and focus purely on being Rational and obeying direct orders to trigger The Scientist ending instead.
