Sorry Sheva, It Looks Like Code Veronica Is Getting The Remake Treatment Instead
I really hope you kept the receipt for that clown makeup I told you to buy just two days ago.
If you read my piece on thursday, you know I was cautiously optimistic about Eva La Dare teasing something for Resident Evil 5. She plays Sheva Alomar and the hashtags on her post seemed pretty damn specific. But the gaming news cycle moves fast and it has no respect for my previous theories. Just as the hype train was leaving the station, a prominent leaker decided to blow up the tracks. It looks like we aren't going to Africa. We are going to Rockfort Island.
The Fun Police Have Arrived
The party pooper in question is AestheticGamer, better known as Dusk Golem. If you follow Capcom leaks you know this name. He isn't right 100% of the time but his track record with the Resident Evil franchise is solid enough that you have to listen when he speaks.
He hopped onto X (formerly Twitter) to reply to a hopeful fan asking about the Resident Evil 5 remake. His answer was blunt. He stated that there is absolutely no RE5 announcement coming this year. Instead, he promised that a remake starting with "C" and ending in "ode Veronica" is getting the spotlight later this year.
This is a massive pivot. For months the internet has been convinced that Chris and Sheva were next in line. But if Dusk Golem is to be believed, Capcom is finally listening to the diehards who have been screaming for Claire Redfield’s return since the RE2 remake dropped.
So What Was That Sheva Tease?
This puts us in a weird spot regarding Eva La Dare’s "March reveal" tweet.
If RE5 isn't happening right now then my secondary theory from the other day is looking a lot stronger. I mentioned that Capcom loves their CGI movies. If Sheva isn't coming back in a game engine she is almost certainly coming back in a movie.
The other option is that she is recording for something totally different. Maybe it is a flashback in Code Veronica or RE9. Maybe it is a Fortnite skin. Maybe she is just messing with us. But if Dusk is right about Code Veronica being the big announcement for the year then Sheva is likely relegated to side content. It sucks for RE5 fans but at least we aren't completely in the dark.
Code Veronica Actually Needs This More
Look, I love Resident Evil 5. It is a stupid, action-heavy romp that is better with a friend. But you can still play it today on a PS5 or Xbox Series X and have a good time. The controls are modern enough. The graphics hold up okay.
Code Veronica is a different beast. It is trapped in the awkward early 2000s transition to full 3D backgrounds. It has tank controls that feel clunkier than the PS1 games. The voice acting for Steve Burnside makes my ears bleed. If any game in the catalog actually needs a complete overhaul from the ground up, it is this one.
Seeing Claire Redfield deal with the Ashford twins in the RE Engine is a dream scenario. It might not be the co-op boulder-punching fest the mainstream crowd wants but for survival horror purists this is the best news we could have gotten. I am ready to be hurt again.
Got a hot take on this? I know you do. Head over to r/neonlightsmedia to discuss it.
