Capcom May Be Swapping Spin-Offs for Story-Sized DLC Instead
Capcom's fix for a spin-off drought might not be a new game at all, but a pair of lengthy DLC expansions bolted onto Resident Evil Requiem and the Code: Veronica remake.
Two DLCs, Two Different Clocks
According to leaker Dusk Golem, Capcom has spent the last few months settling on story-driven DLC expansions, running several hours each, for both Requiem and the Veronica remake, with more RE titles possibly getting the same treatment down the line. Requiem's expansion is reportedly eyeing a late 2027 release. Veronica's is looking at 2028, putting it over a year past the base game's launch.
That gap is worth sitting with for a second. Separate Ways shipped inside the original Resident Evil 4 remake at launch because it was adapting content that already existed in the 2005 original. A Veronica DLC landing more than a year later would be a fresh production cycle, not a port job, which lines up with Capcom apparently treating this as new work rather than a quick tie-in.
Why the Spin-Off Well Ran Dry
The timing tracks with recent comments from Capcom producer Masachika Kawata, who told Nintendo Everything the studio's attention is locked onto new mainline entries and remakes right now, adding there isn't "a whole lot left" in the tank for spin-off projects. That's a plain enough admission that the current lineup, Requiem included, is eating whatever development capacity Capcom has to spare.
Read alongside the DLC rumor, the pattern starts to look less like a coincidence and more like a workaround. Building expansions on top of games that already have finished assets, environments, and combat systems is a lighter lift than standing up something like a new Revelations entry from scratch. It'd let Capcom keep delivering fresh Resident Evil content without pulling staff off Requiem or whatever remake comes next, though that's an inference from the pieces on the table rather than anything Capcom has said outright.
What Veronica's Story DLC Might Actually Be
Nobody's confirmed a plot for either expansion, but the shape of Code: Veronica's story leaves a few obvious gaps to fill. Wesker's whereabouts during the game overlap with both Rockfort Island and the Antarctic base, and Code: Veronica X already dipped into his perspective through the Wesker's Report bonus content, so an expansion built around his side of events wouldn't require reinventing anything. A Chris and Jill focused epilogue tied to Umbrella's eventual collapse is another candidate, since that plot thread runs through Veronica's main story already. Both are reasonable guesses based on what the game already sets up, not anything Capcom has hinted at directly.
Requiem's DLC is a blanker slate for now, since nothing's leaked about what story ground it might cover.
None of this is official. Capcom hasn't announced either expansion, and until it does, late 2027 and 2028 are targets attached to a rumor, not dates on a roadmap.
