Shift at Midnight: Every Monster and How to Deal With the Dentist
Shift at Midnight throws five different threats at you before the game even gets to the one thing you can't fight back against.
Most of what kills you early in Shift at Midnight comes down to timing, not difficulty. Missing a doppelganger at the counter, freezing during a Hunt, or panicking the first time the Dentist shows up all cost you the same way, they turn a manageable night into a dead one. Here's what you're actually up against, night by night, and what to do about each one.
Spotting Doppelgangers
Doppelgangers are the only threat you deal with before anything turns violent, and they're the one you have the most control over. They come through the door looking like regular customers, and your job is to catch the detail that doesn't line up, a mismatched ID, an answer that contradicts what's on file, something about their appearance that's just slightly off. Miss one and it doesn't just walk out the door quietly. It reports back to whatever's hunting you that night, and you'll be dealing with it again later under much worse conditions.
Deal with a suspected doppelganger before the sale finishes, not after. Once that transaction closes, your window closes with it, and shooting them post-sale doesn't stop them from coming back as something worse.
The Entity
Miss a doppelganger and the consequence isn't immediate. It's a Hunt later that shift, led by the Entity, a spider-like creature that's blind and hunts by sound alone. That last part matters more than almost anything else in the game. Movement, mic noise, anything audible gives your position away, and staying quiet is worth more than any weapon you can buy. If it does find you, it goes for web attacks first to pin you down, then closes in with melee, and it gets meaningfully stronger with every night that passes, which is exactly why the better weapons sitting at the back computer stop being optional the further you get into the thirteen shifts.
It rarely shows up alone. Three other threats ride along during a Hunt, and each one asks for a different response.
Demented
The Demented moves faster than anything else in the game and closes distance fast, but it has one exploitable weakness: it can't act while you're looking directly at it. Keep your camera on it and it's stuck. Look away and it closes in immediately. Traps scattered through the store help too, since there's a real chance the Demented eats one meant for the Entity instead.
Marionette
The Marionette works more like a puzzle than a fight. It's a jack-in-the-box creature that announces itself with jingling music, and the only way to stop it from popping is rewinding its music box before the song finishes, three separate times. Finding and interacting with the box pulls the Entity's attention toward your location though, so it's rarely a clean trade. This one doesn't even show up until Shift 9, so anyone dying to it earlier than that is dealing with something else.
Shrieking Doll
Shrieking Dolls are the ones people underestimate. They're small and crawl along the ground, and unlike the Entity, they can actually see you. Spotting one before it spots you is the whole game here, since they'll close in and leap once they're close enough. You can shoot them from range, but firing gives away your position just as effectively as getting caught by them would. Landing a kill on one specifically unlocks its own achievement, along with a few others tied to how you handle the other threats.
The Dentist
The Dentist doesn't play by the same rules as anything else on this list, and treating him like a normal threat is how people die on the final shift.
Early Appearances
He shows up a handful of times earlier in the game, standing near the noticeboard, taking down a customer inside the shop, but he's not fightable during any of those appearances no matter what you throw at him. The first time he showed up trailing a customer through the aisles, I genuinely thought the game had glitched, right up until he did it again a few nights later.
The Shift 13 Encounter
The real encounter happens on the final shift. He enters the shop, shooting him triggers a chase, and there is no version of this fight where weapons or traps end it. Barricading doesn't work either. The only way through is running, specifically toward Sheriff Clyde, who finishes the job once you reach him. Don't hide along the way, don't turn around to check how close he is, and don't waste time on anything that isn't putting distance between you and him. Which ending you land on afterward comes down to two choices made a shift earlier, and that part's a completely different conversation.
