Subnautica 2 Guide: How to Cure Heat Intolerance and Survive

Getting cooked alive inside your own diving suit is an agonizing way to lose your inventory.

A bioluminescent alien creature with wing-like fins and a glowing purple core in the deep-sea environment of Subnautica 2.

The ocean isn't just cold and dark. If you explore far enough to the east, you'll eventually stumble into high temperature zones. The game warns you immediately. A temperature gauge pops up on your HUD with an arrow pointing directly at the heat source, and getting too close results in instant death. Before you throw yourself into a magma vent hoping to brute force your way to some rare resources, you need to step back and alter your DNA. You have to track down a specific Gene Donor to grant you the Heat Tolerance adaptation.

Preparing for the Deep Dive

You can't just swim up and shake hands with this particular alien flower. It is locked behind a natural barricade, and the cave system it sits in is incredibly hostile.

The Sonic Resonator Requirement

You absolutely must craft the Sonic Resonator before attempting this run. You will need it to blast away a thick, white anomaly called Bloom Biofilm that blocks your path. If you are struggling to find the necessary ingots and materials to build this tool, you should read my Subnautica 2 Scanner Station guide to track down the exact ores you need.

Oxygen Management

This Gene Donor is hidden inside a deep, labyrinth-like cave system. Do not attempt this expedition with your pathetic starting lung capacity. Craft a Standard Air Tank first, or at the very least, pack your pockets full of Air Bladders so you don't drown while clearing the area.

Finding the Heat Tolerance Gene Donor

Once your gear is sorted, you need to swim out and locate the second Angel Comb.

Coordinates and the Biofilm Entrance

Start at your Lifepod. Pull out your compass and look toward 295 degrees, resting right between West and Northwest. Swim exactly 202 meters in that direction. Look down into the water, and you'll spot a hole completely covered by Bloom Biofilm. If you don't see the white blossom blocking an entrance, swim around the immediate area until you find the right opening. Aim your Sonic Resonator, shoot the white blossom to wipe out the anomaly, and swim inside the cave.

Clearing the Bloom Infestation

Entering the cave reveals a giant pink flower in the center, but it is clamped completely shut. You have to do some violent gardening to force it open.

The Tunnel Blossoms

Follow the trailing roots of the flower deeper into a side tunnel. At the end of this path, you will find three more Bloom Biofilm flowers. Blast all three of them with your Resonator and quickly swim back to the main chamber.

The Main Chamber and Hostiles

Back at the central Gene Donor, you'll now see four new blossoms of Biofilm surrounding it. Wipe them all out. Be incredibly careful here, because a hostile creature lurks right in this exact spot. You will notice the creature has two Blooms attached directly to its body. You do not need to erase those. Ignore the ones on the monster, clear the four around the plant, and the Gene Donor will finally reveal itself. Interact with the pink center to permanently inject yourself with the Heat Tolerance trait.

If you are sick of getting ambushed in these dark caves alone, check out my Subnautica 2 Multiplayer and Co-Op guide so you can bring a friend along to watch your back.

Exploring the Hot Zones

Now that you are genetically modified to handle extreme temperatures, a massive chunk of the map opens up for exploration. The heat zones hold some of the most valuable mid-game resources you can find.

Here is exactly what you are risking your life for in the deep heat.

High Temperature Resource Details
Gold Essential for advanced electronics. Only found within the high temperature areas.
Sulfur Crucial mid-game crafting material. Locked entirely behind the heat zones.
Unique Fauna and Flora New hostile creatures and alien plants to scan for your databank catalog.

Don't get arrogant just because you have the adaptation. Heat Tolerance is not full immunity. There are still specific spots deep inside the hot zones where the temperature goes completely beyond your new threshold, and it will deal continuous damage if you swim into it.
