Windrose Boar Companion Guide: How to Unlock Truffle
Navigating the Foothills archipelago alone is a fantastic way to get surrounded by Alpha Wolves and end up as a meal.
While you can technically kite enemies and rely on parrying, having a dedicated tank to draw aggro completely changes the flow of combat. Windrose allows you to summon "Truffle," a legendary armored boar who deals massive poise damage and stuns enemies.
Now before you waste an hour throwing berries at wild pigs hoping one of them follows you home, you need to understand that the companion system is tied entirely to a specific puzzle. You have to track down the Legendary Boar Whistle. If you have not even reached the Foothills biome yet, you need to step back and read my Thomas Richards boss guide to unlock the mid-game map.
Step 1: Locating the Ancient Village
Because Windrose utilizes procedural generation, I cannot give you a clean grid coordinate for the puzzle. The location moves for every single world instance.
To find the ritual site, open your map and scan the Foothills islands for a specific Wheat Field icon that has a 0/1 completion marker attached to it. This specific Point of Interest (POI) marks the Ancient Village. Do not bother sailing to Wheat Field icons labeled 3/4 or higher; those are standard, cleared farms and will not contain the altar.
Step 2: The Altar Ritual
Once you arrive at the Ancient Village, walk up the main staircase to find the Ancient Altar sitting at the foot of a praising statue. Interacting with it reveals that you need two specific offerings: 20 Pieces of Meat and 3 Vessels of Ritual Oil.
Farming the 20 Pieces of Meat
You can hunt the local wildlife to gather this, but there is a significantly faster way to exploit the game's AI.
The Ancient Village is absolutely crawling with aggressive Wolves and Goats. Do not fight them yourself. Instead, sprint past a pack of Wolves and kite them directly into a herd of Goats. The two animal factions will immediately aggro onto each other and fight to the death. Sit back, wait for the dust to settle, and easily loot the 20 pieces of meat off the corpses. If you want to automate your meat supply later, check my Merchant Contracts guide.
Finding the 3 Vessels of Ritual Oil
The oil is not dropped by enemies. It is hidden inside three Ancient Chests tucked into the ruined structures surrounding the main altar.
First Vessel: Walk to the ruined building on the right side of the altar. You will see a wall of thick vines. Pull out your axe, chop the vines down, and open the chest hidden behind them.
Second Vessel: Look around the perimeter for a broken stone column that looks like a makeshift ramp. Sprint up the column to access the upper floor of the adjacent ruin to find the second chest.
Third Vessel: Go to the final main structure. There is no ramp or door here; you have to physically jump up the exterior side of the ruin to haul yourself inside. The final chest is tucked in the corner next to some herbal containers.
Step 3: Summoning Truffle
Once you have the meat and the oil, return to the Ancient Altar. Submit the offerings to trigger a short cinematic event.
The altar will drop the Legendary Boar Whistle directly into your inventory. Move the whistle to your hotbar and click it to summon Truffle. The whistle has unlimited uses, dictated only by a brief cooldown timer if Truffle happens to get knocked out in a fight.
Truffle is an absolute menace in melee combat. His attacks deal heavy Strength damage, which rapidly depletes the invisible poise meter of hostile targets. Once an enemy's poise is broken, they are temporarily stunned, giving you a massive window to reload your musket or heal. He is practically mandatory for surviving mid-game boss fights. If you want to put him to the test immediately, read my Israel Hands boss guide and let Truffle draw the pirate's spectral aggro.
