Windrose Leveling Guide: How to Earn XP Fast
One second you are peacefully gathering resources on the beach, and the next you are getting completely flattened by a pirate who woke up and chose violence.
The progression system in Windrose does not hold your hand. If you spend your afternoon endlessly battling wild boars hoping to see an arbitrary experience bar fill up, you are completely wasting your time. Basic combat and crafting reward you with absolutely zero character experience.
Now before you waste another hour picking fights for no reason, you need to fundamentally change how you navigate the archipelago. Leveling up faster is not about fighting harder, it is about playing smarter. If you want to unlock those vital endurance and damage perks, you have to prioritize looting and questing. If you need a refresher on where to actually spend these points once you earn them, keep my talents and stats guide open in another tab.
The Point of Interest (POI) Grind
The absolute fastest way to level up your character is to systematically dismantle every Point of Interest (POI) on the map. Every island is littered with question marks representing pirate camps, ancient ruins, and outposts.
However, the game enforces a very strict rule for rewarding you. You only get the XP payout if you loot every single chest located within that specific POI. If you open three chests, take the gold, but leave a single piece of junk in the fourth chest, the location will not register as "cleared" and you get nothing. If you do not want to carry the junk, drag it out of the chest inventory and drop it on the dirt. The chest must be physically empty.
Tracking Down Hidden Chests
Because the XP trigger is tied to opening every container, missing a single hidden chest will completely stall your progression. The developers intentionally tucked a lot of these boxes in obscure locations.
Ancient Ruins: These are notorious for hiding their loot. Always check for a cellar or basement level. Sometimes the final chest is physically buried under debris. Look closely for shining particles hovering over the dirt; if you see them, pull out your pickaxe and dig it up.
Traveler's Camps and Jungle Caves: Do not just blindly run around looking for a wooden box. Read the lore notes scattered around the camp, as they frequently contain direct hints about where the loot is stashed.
Pirate POIs: These are usually sprawling multi-room fortresses. You have to check every single tent and back room. If you are struggling to survive these large-scale raids, review my combat and survival guide to learn how to kite the guards.
Shipwrecks: Generally straightforward. The chests are almost always sitting right on the exposed deck.
Keep in mind that while the chests themselves do not respawn once a POI is cleared, the raw materials in the area will grow back.
The Daily Pirate Camp Loop
Once you unlock the second island biome, farming coastal pirate camps becomes one of the most reliable leveling methods available.
These human pirate camps respawn daily. By dropping a Fast Travel Bell nearby, you create a highly efficient, repeatable loop for farming POI clears, hoarding Piastre, and stockpiling gunpowder. Just make sure you are picking the right fights. You want to actively avoid fighting Drowned enemies. The undead are incredibly tanky, possess frustrating attack patterns, and their loot payouts simply do not justify the time investment.
Progression Multipliers: Tools and Comfort
Leveling up quickly is entirely dependent on how efficiently you navigate the map. You can drastically speed up your XP gain by making a few smart investments at your base.
First, upgrade your copper tools before your weapons. Having a better pickaxe and axe allows you to gather materials significantly faster. Faster gathering leads to quicker base upgrades, which allows you to push into higher tier zones sooner.
Second, never leave your base without a maxed out Rested buff. Resting at your Bonfire increases your stamina regeneration. By placing decorative furniture around your camp, you increase your base comfort level. A high comfort level means this stamina buff lasts upwards of thirty minutes, allowing you to sprint between POIs and dodge incoming attacks without constantly stopping to catch your breath.
Questing Efficiency
The final pillar of progression is completing quests. Knocking out main story objectives yields massive XP spikes and unlocks new biomes.
You will also stumble upon side quests while exploring various outposts. These are absolutely worth doing, provided they actually log into your main Journal.
However, you need to understand the difference between a side quest and a side activity. Items like Blackbeard Crew Maps will lead you to buried treasure and rare gear, but they do not grant character XP. Do them for the upgrades, but do not rely on them to level up.
