007 First Light Guide: How to Master Espionage and Stealth
Treating JameTreating James Bond like a completely invisible ninja is a fantastic way to fail your mission.
Unlike IO Interactive's other major franchise, 007 First Light doesn't expect you to be a perfect, silent ghost who restarts the checkpoint every time a guard looks in your direction. James Bond is a social creature. He lies, he improvises, and when talking fails, he punches his way out of bad situations. Before you ruin a perfectly good infiltration by panicking, you need to understand how the game's flexible espionage system actually functions. You're expected to adapt on the fly, and knowing when to use your specific stealth tools is the key to surviving behind enemy lines.
The Core Stealth Toolkit
You have a massive array of options when infiltrating a restricted area, but your survival entirely depends on knowing your basic inputs.
Managing Your Instinct
Before you start shouting across hallways to distract guards, you need to pay attention to the Instinct meter located on your Q-Watch in the bottom left corner of your screen.
Your social stealth abilities aren't infinite. Both bluffing and luring enemies directly consume Instinct points. Nothing gets you shot faster than trying to lie your way past security with an empty meter, leaving you standing there awkwardly in silence. You have to actively earn this currency by playing well. Successfully performing takedowns, eliminating enemies in combat, and eavesdropping on conversations will slowly fill your meter back up.
If your meter is running dry and you desperately need a guard to look the other way, look for environmental hazards instead. Sabotaging a nearby radio or a noisy generator draws enemy attention just as effectively as a verbal lure, and it costs absolutely nothing to trigger. Keeping your pockets full is vital if you want to afford the massive 100K auction fee later in the story.
Talking Your Way Out of Trouble
Bond is famously a smooth talker, and the game heavily encourages you to use your words before you use your fists.
The Art of the Bluff
This is your ultimate get out of jail free card. If you get caught trespassing in a restricted zone, an NPC or a guard will usually call out to you before they start shooting. If you have the Instinct to spend, hit the Bluff button. Bond immediately spins a convincing lie that forces the guard to back down, allowing you to walk right past them.
You need to keep moving, though. The bluff is strictly temporary. An X icon will appear over the NPC's head, indicating that the effect is actively wearing off. If you stick around too long, they'll realize they've been played. Also, be incredibly careful around Watchers. These elite security personnel are entirely immune to your lies and will instantly sound the alarm if you try to bluff them.
Finding Disguises
If you want to conserve your Instinct completely, start hunting for hats. Disguises in this game act like absolute cheat codes. Simply put on the correct hat, and you can stroll through heavily fortified areas without raising a single eyebrow.
The only catch is that the Watchers are trained to look for imposters. You can easily spot a Watcher because they wear the exact same disguise as you and track you with a bright white dot over their heads. Give them a wide berth.
Moving Like a Spy
When lying fails, you have to rely on your agility and your gadgets to navigate the environment.
Using Swap Cover
Don't try to flat out run between hiding spots. Sprinting makes noise and immediately draws attention. Instead, crouch at the edge of your cover and aim your camera where you want to go. A white outline appears at your destination. Hit the Swap Cover button, and Bond performs a rapid, silent dash. Enemies might catch a brief glimpse of movement, but you move so fast that it never triggers a full alert.
Avoiding the Cameras
If there's one thing that will ruin your mission, it's ignoring the security cameras. You can see exactly where a camera is pointing by looking for a bright circle of light on the floor filled with plus signs. If you step into that circle for even a second, the light flashes red and a heavily armed reinforcement team swarms your location.
If a camera blocks your only path forward, open your Q-Watch interface and hack it. This temporarily disables the feed so you can slip past. If you want a more permanent solution, equip the Laser Strap gadget before the mission and use it to completely melt the camera lens.
When Stealth Fails
Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you get spotted. Before you panic and try to sprint away, realize that running is the absolute worst thing you can do.
Running alerts every single enemy in the building. Instead, keep your fights contained. Hand to hand combat in this game is surprisingly quiet. If a single guard spots you in a small room, just step up and fight him. As long as nobody else is actively looking through the doorway, the rest of the base stays completely unaware. If you struggle with the combat controls, I highly recommend brushing up on your technique by practicing how to rush over an edge in the TacSim mode.
Pay close attention to the alert circle filling up over an enemy's head. If that circle completes, they are going to pull the trigger on their gun or scream for backup. You can interrupt this animation by throwing a nearby item at their head or shooting them with a Dart Phone to stagger them. Once they stumble, close the distance and hit the takedown button to put them on the floor before the situation spirals out of control.
