Dead as Disco Guide: How to Beat Arora and Master Combat

Keeping the beat in Dead as Disco requires a lot more than just good rhythm when your former bandmates are actively trying to send you back to the lobby.

A punk-styled character with a mohawk and red plaid pants leaps through the air over a vibrant green neon explosion with a guitar-shaped weapon in Dead as Disco.

You step into the shoes of Charlie Disco, returning from the grave to crash a reunion concert and find out who actually killed you. Taking down the legendary Idols and navigating the dive bar politics requires mastering a combat system heavily tied to the music. The groove is your ultimate Beat Kune Do. I spent plenty of time getting knocked around the arena by bouncers and bosses to map out the safest paths to victory. Before you waste three hours losing your combo multiplier to cheap shots, apply these strategies to your next run.

The Gear and The Groove

You have access to a few different instruments of destruction. Knowing when to swap them out is the key to maintaining your multiplier and unlocking new talents. Dancing and landing perfect dodges between enemy openings is absolutely mandatory to keep your combo number ticking upward. Relying on basic strikes will leave you vulnerable. I highly recommend upgrading both Hemlock's guitar and Prophet's gauntlets as fast as possible, as doing so grants you complete immunity while using them.

Weapon / Technique Tactical Advantage
Charlie's Sticks The definitive choice for achieving rapid combos and maintaining aggressive momentum against standard targets.
Electric Guitars (Shred) Equip these specifically when your main goal is chasing a massive high score on a track.
Prophet's Gauntlets Essential for deflecting incoming attacks and securing perfect parries against heavy hitters.
Hemlock's Guitar Execute a charged attack followed by a close range finisher to easily melt through tough bouncers.

Mastering the Windmill Kick

The move list leaves a lot of crucial information hidden. I spent way too long trying to launch enemies into the air before realizing I was missing a vital piece of the puzzle.

The Upgrade Requirement

You need to fully upgrade the Windmill in the Skill Tree before it gains the ability to fling enemies upward. This launch is the required setup for a devastating air takedown that deals massive splash damage.

Nailing the Input

Getting the input right takes a bit of muscle memory, especially on a keyboard. You need to hold down your attack button until Charlie glows blue, perform a full 360 circle movement on your analog stick or WASD keys, and then release the attack button. Once you get a feeling for the circle motion, you can execute it rapidly and clean up entire waves.

Breaking Down Arora

The Arora boss fight is a massive difficulty spike that throws off the entire rhythm of the game. Her tempo is painfully slow, the beat feels irregular, and she throws tracking meteors that will end your run in an instant. Her quick dodge attacks are also on a frustrating delay.

Perfecting the Prompt Timing

Do not rely entirely on the visual QTE prompt circles for her dodge attacks. Her prompts require a slight pause. You have to let the outer circle sit for a half second before actually hitting the button.

Countering the Meteors

The meteors during her one-on-one phase require a specific counter. The easiest way to handle them is to stop moving entirely. Equip Prophet's Gauntlets, stand your ground, and use the guard ability to execute a perfect parry. This knocks the rock right back at her and scores a free knockdown. Pay close attention to her animations, as her telegraph for the meteor toss is very distinct.

Advanced Crowd Control Tactics

Getting overwhelmed by mobs is a quick way to lose your health pool. You need to manipulate the physics of the arena to your advantage.

Animation Canceling and Charged Attacks

You can hold a charge input during stage countdowns or during the unskippable animation of a takedown. Doing this lets you unleash a powerful kick the exact millisecond you regain control of Charlie.

Bowling for Bouncers

When dealing with annoying shielded enemies, do not attack them directly. Find a smaller, lower-level minion and hit them with a charged attack. If you angle the trajectory right, you will knock the smaller enemy directly into the shielded one like a bowling pin. This stops their forward charge and gives you a massive opening to follow up with an attack.
