EA Sports FC 27's Open-World Mode The Grounds Leaks in Beta Footage
I always suspected that working the night shift at a convenience store would eventually kill me, but I didn't expect it to involve this much ectoplasm.
What EA already confirmed
EA unveiled The Grounds on July 23, alongside the FC 27 reveal. It's a persistent open world holding up to 100 accounts at once, split into three districts modeled on football culture in the UK, France, and Argentina. Four mentors populate it: Kylian Mbappé, Chloe Kelly, Paulo Dybala, and Alex Hunter, the fictional lead from The Journey story mode.
The Grounds skips last-gen entirely. FC 27 still launches on PS4 and Xbox One September 25, but those versions keep Clubs as the only social mode. PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC get the full hub.
The leaked footage
Closed beta testers are barred from sharing footage under EA's own terms. Two clips got out anyway, one running two minutes, the other nine.
The short one: someone exploring the open world, then a cutscene where Chloe Kelly introduces Kickabouts, mini-games mixing football with dodgeball, basketball, and bocce ball. It also shows the objective list, Mentors, Live Events, Club Live Events, Club Milestones, Closed Beta Objectives, all paying out in Grounds currency.
The long one covers more. A cosmetics store sells tops, bottoms, boots, outfits, tattoos, hair, facial hair, facial accessories, arm sleeves, card backgrounds, emotes. One mini-game has you striking a floating ball at a target. Then a 1v1 starts straight from the open world, no menu.
What it's getting compared to
Reaction from the community leans one direction: this looks like NBA 2K's social hub. Comparisons point at the cosmetic store and the general presentation. A few pin the running animation on EA's own Skate instead.
One comment cut through it plainly: "who thought this was a good idea." EA hasn't run a shared world at this scale before. Neither has anyone tested a hundred accounts in one instance yet.
The cost, stated plainly
Buy FC 27 on PS4 or Xbox One and none of this applies, Clubs stays the only door in. Buy it on current-gen and the whole new progression track, Archetype XP and Grounds Coins both, runs through a hub built on cosmetics and mini-games, whether Ultimate Team or Career was the actual reason for the purchase.
