Gothic 1 Remake: How To Get A Sleep Scroll

You can stand in front of Baal Cadar all day, but the man will completely ignore you until you put one of his students into a magical coma.

A mage in ornate blue robes casts a magical spell while facing an approaching undead zombie in a dark dungeon from Gothic 1 Remake.

If you're working through the Admission to The Swamp Camp quest, you already know how infuriating the local leadership is. You have to secure the approval of four out of the five Baals to officially join their cult. Most of them refuse to even acknowledge your existence. Baal Cadar is arguably the most stubborn of the bunch. You can't just walk up and strike up a conversation. Before you waste hours wandering the colony looking for a high-level magic vendor to solve this problem, you need to know the game actually hands you the exact tool you need for free. You just have to do some manual labor first.

Working For Baal Orun

Your main target for securing this magic is Baal Orun. He oversees the local swampweed production and needs someone to handle the heavy lifting.

The Prerequisite Hustle

You can't just walk up and ask Orun for a job right away. First, you have to complete a prerequisite task called Ghorim's Replacement. It's a simple fetch quest. Once you finish it and report back to Ghorim, just hang around the immediate area. Don't run off to another camp. Baal Orun will eventually approach you on his own. This automatically triggers the Swampweed Harvest side quest.

Getting The Bonus Reward

Your actual job is to collect the daily harvest and deliver the entire batch straight to Cor Kalom. Once you hand the weed over to Kalom, your journal updates and marks the quest as complete. Stop right there. A lot of people walk away at this point and completely miss the reward. You need to hike all the way back to the area where they mash the swampweed and talk to Baal Orun again. He gives you the Sleep Scroll as an unprompted bonus for actually finishing the job.

The New Camp Backup Plan

There's a secondary way to get your hands on this scroll, but it requires venturing out into the wild.

If you happen to be doing quests near the New Camp, you'll eventually run into another Baal hiding out in a nearby cave. He offers a Sleep Scroll as one of his quest rewards. If you're given a choice of rewards from him, absolutely take the scroll. I skipped it on my first run because I wanted something else, and I ended up completely stuck trying to impress Cadar later. Take the magic when it's offered so you don't paint yourself into a corner.

Forcing Cadar To Talk

Once you actually have the scroll in your inventory, it's time to force Baal Cadar to acknowledge you.

Dropping A Student

Walk right up to Baal Cadar's teaching circle. Equip your Sleep Scroll and target one of the students sitting on the dirt listening to his lecture. Cast the spell. It only costs 3 Mana to use, and it immediately drops the target unconscious. The in-game description literally reads "What you need right now is rest" (which feels perfectly sarcastic for this situation).

This blatant display of psychic dominance completely catches Cadar off guard. He finally breaks his vow of silence and gives you his official approval for your admission. Winning him over is incredibly valuable. Cadar immediately becomes a dedicated trader for magic goods and serves as a teacher who can increase your maximum mana pool for the rest of your playthrough.
