Life Is Strange: Reunion Backtalk Guide: Weaponized Sarcasm
Arguing with overly dramatic college students is exhausting, but unlocking the Sass Queen achievement makes the verbal abuse entirely worth it.
Max Caulfield gets to manipulate the fabric of reality to solve her problems. Chloe Price just yells at people until they break down and confess their deepest secrets. The beloved Backtalk mechanic from Life is Strange: Before the Storm makes a glorious return in Reunion. This system allows you to actively weaponize Chloe's abrasive personality to outwit the various suspects and roadblocks you encounter throughout the narrative.
However, playing the role of an aggressive conversationalist is a lot harder than it looks. The dialogue wheel in this franchise has a notorious habit of being incredibly vague. You might select a prompt that says something completely harmless, only to watch in horror as Chloe delivers a devastating five minute monologue that irreparably damages a relationship. Guessing the logic behind these arguments is a frustrating way to play.
There are three specific Backtalk scenarios scattered throughout the game. If you successfully navigate all three without failing the conversation, you will unlock the Sass Queen achievement. I have already suffered through the awkward dialogue failures so you do not have to guess your way through them. If you are trying to wrap up your platinum run, I highly recommend keeping my Life Is Strange: Reunion Trophy and Achievement Guide open in another tab to track the rest of the collectibles.
The Mechanics of Verbal Destruction
You cannot just walk up to a suspect and start throwing insults. The game requires you to actually gather ammunition before you engage in a verbal firefight. This means you need to thoroughly investigate your surroundings and exhaust all optional dialogue with innocent bystanders before you ever click the Backtalk prompt.
If you attempt to interrogate someone without the proper context, you will literally lack the correct dialogue options to win the argument. Chloe will stumble over her words, the NPC will completely shut her down, and you will miss your chance at the achievement.
Thankfully, the developers added a very forgiving safety net. If you click the wrong prompt and ruin the argument, you do not need to restart your entire playthrough. You can simply use the Scene Select feature from the main menu. Loading into the specific chapter, successfully completing the Backtalk sequence, and quitting out will still count toward your overarching Sass Queen progression.
Scenario One: Evicting Noelle
Your first real test of verbal combat takes place during the Lying and Waiting scene. You take control of Chloe while she is hanging out in the local bar. Your target here is Noelle, who eventually approaches you with the sole intention of kicking you out of the establishment. You need to flip the script and make her regret initiating the conversation.
Before you even look at Noelle, you must speak to Lucas and Amanda. They are sitting right next to you. Exhaust every single dialogue option they have available. They will passively feed you the exact information you need to tear Noelle down. Once you have heard everything they have to say, Noelle will trigger the confrontation.
Scenario Two: Breaking Joey
The second encounter happens deep into the Times in Turtle scene. The narrative splits your perspective here. Max is outside having a relatively calm chat with Safi, while you are left controlling Chloe inside the main bar. Your target this time is Joey. He is hiding around the far corner of the room trying to avoid attention.
Do not approach him immediately. You need to work the room. Walk around the bar and speak to the other patrons. You are basically fishing for gossip. Once you have clicked on enough people and gathered enough background intel, the game will finally let you approach Joey for a proper interrogation. This one is slightly longer than the first encounter, requiring three correct inputs to completely break his confidence.
Scenario Three: Ruining Ren
The final Backtalk sequence is easily the most important one in the entire game. It occurs during the appropriately titled Chloe's Decision scene. The stakes are significantly higher here. You are back in the bar, but the casual college drama has been replaced by accusations involving the Caledon protests and a literal fire.
Ren is sitting by himself on the left side of the room. He is radiating nervous energy. This encounter requires the most physical evidence gathering. Walk over to where he is sitting. You must interact with his notebook, and you must actually open it to read the contents. Then look down at the floor and interact with his bag that is stuffed full of paint cans.
Speak to him casually one time to establish a baseline. After that initial chat, the heavy interrogation prompt will appear. Be warned that the outcome of this specific argument drops a massive piece of story lore. If you are worried about how this interaction shapes the rest of the game, take a quick detour and read my Choices and Consequences Guide before you commit to ruining his day.
Selecting that final option causes Ren to violently thump the table, essentially admitting defeat and spilling the truth. It is incredibly satisfying to watch Chloe systematically dismantle his alibi.
Once the cutscene finishes playing out and the dialogue wraps up, your Sass Queen achievement will officially pop. You have successfully navigated the social minefield of Caledon University without having to rely on any time rewinding mechanics. Sometimes pure, unfiltered aggression gets the job done much faster.
