Marvel Rivals Guide: Unlocking The Free Groot Ironwood Serpent Skin
NetEase is actually handing out a premium cosmetic without demanding you open your wallet.
Season 8.5 just went live, and alongside the new K'un-Lun: Shenloong Arena map, the developer dropped the Shenloong Tournament event. Instead of locking the best cosmetics behind a premium battle pass track, they placed the epic Groot Ironwood Serpent costume at the very end of a completely free 12-tier progression system. You don't need to spend a single Unit to get it, but you do need to understand how the event's internal limits operate before time runs out.
The Tournament Structure
The Shenloong Tournament runs entirely independent of your main battle pass. It launched on June 12, 2026, and officially closes its doors on July 10, 2026, at 9:00 AM UTC.
That gives you roughly four weeks to clear the board. Earning experience is incredibly straightforward: you simply play standard matches. Both quick play and competitive queues feed directly into your event progression, meaning you can grind this out while testing the new 18v18 Bounty Annihilation format. If you want to see how these timed events factor into the long-term health of the game, take a look at the Marvel Rivals Season 8.5 content roadmap to see what else is dropping soon.
Navigating The Daily Progression Cap
Before you try to cancel your weekend plans to grind out all 12 levels in a single sitting, you need to look at the fine print.
NetEase slapped a hard limit on your progression, capping your earnings at exactly 7,200 event EXP per day. It doesn't matter if you drop twenty kills a game and go on a massive winning streak; once you hit that daily ceiling, your progress completely stalls out until the server resets. You have to log in consistently across multiple days to actually reach the final tier, which prevents anyone from brute-forcing the skin on day one.
The Complete Reward Track
While the Ironwood Serpent skin is the obvious grand prize at level 12, the preceding tiers are packed with a solid mix of profile customization items.
The pass functions as a massive, free Groot bundle, handing you his animated spray, emote, nameplate, and a custom MVP animation that would normally cost real money in the shop. Even if you refuse to play tanks, the pass still drops a few valuable items for other characters along the way. Expanding The Roster Coverage
If you only play Groot occasionally, Tiers 5 and 9 are still worth paying attention to. You get a Cyclops "Uncanny Warrior" spray and a Galacta spray, both of which tie directly into the new Season 8.5 content. Hitting level 10 also nets you some gallery cards featuring Apocalypse. It's not a reason to grind the mode on its own, but it's a nice bonus if you are already logging matches every night.
Parallel Giveaways And Deadlines
Because of the 7,200 daily XP cap, you absolutely cannot wait until the final week of the season to start this track.
If you procrastinate until July, the event will literally expire before the system allows you to earn enough points for the skin. There is no indication from the studio that the Ironwood Serpent will become purchasable with Units after the July 10 deadline, so regular play is your only real guarantee.
While you are tracking your daily XP limits, make sure you aren't ignoring the other freebies NetEase is currently handing out. You can claim a free Emma Frost Gala Glam skin through the Season 7.5 Hellfire Gala event, and linking your accounts for Twitch drops will secure the Star-Lord Ignite costume. Most importantly, check your in-game mailbox right now (seriously, go look). The developer tucked 2,500 free Units in there just for logging in during the mid-season update.
