Should You Kill Norbert the Gnome in Shift at Midnight? Here's What Actually Happens

Every doppelganger red flag in the game points straight at Norbert the gnome, and following that instinct is exactly how you wreck your shift.

A low-poly garden gnome wearing a blue hat stands behind a lemonade stand at night in the game Shift at Midnight, with a prompt to "Talk" appearing on screen.

Who Is Norbert, Anyway?

Norbert turns up in both Story Mode and Endless Mode, and he's built to look like trouble. He drifts behind the counter like he's clocked in for a shift of his own, won't answer a single question you throw at him, and typing his name into the NET Database gets you nothing back. The one detail that doesn't line up with the usual doppelganger checklist is his ID. Scan it and it comes back clean.

First time he showed up in my shop, every instinct said shoot, right up until that ID scanned legitimate. That's the whole trick with Norbert. Everything about him screams doppelganger except the one piece of evidence that actually matters.

No, He's Not a Doppelganger

Mechanically, Norbert doesn't belong to any of the five entity types the game hunts you with at the end of a shift. Kill an actual doppelganger and you're dealing with a hunt afterward. Kill Norbert and none of that triggers. He's his own category, closer to a scripted test of restraint than a real threat.

The problem is he hits every doppelganger tell you've been trained to spot, and shooting first feels like the responsible call. It isn't.

Leave Him Alone, Nothing Happens

First encounter, Norbert does his business and walks out. No trick, no follow-up. That's the entire interaction if you serve him and let him go.

Kill Him, and He Comes Back Worse

Hurt him once, whether that's a bullet or anything else, and he doesn't disappear. He returns on no fixed schedule, and each visit brings a new way to make your night harder:

  • Riding a motorcycle straight through the store, scattering any customers nearby

  • Parking outside and turning the area into a mess of his own making

  • Setting up an unlicensed lemonade stand and lacing the drinks with something that'll take a real chunk out of your HP

  • Disguising himself as an ordinary customer, only identifiable if you check him with the Scanner

  • Quietly engineering situations where you end up harming a real customer by mistake

None of it follows a pattern you can plan around, and that's deliberate. It also makes Norbert a genuine liability if you care about your accuracy on legitimate doppelganger calls. Every disguised visit is one more chance to second-guess a real customer standing next to a gnome in costume.

The Actual Strategy

If you're working toward the True Ending, where nobody dies, the move is simple. Serve him, don't ask him anything, let him leave. He might still show up again later, but without the chaos attached, since you never gave him a reason to escalate in the first place.

Keep the Scanner ready any time you suspect he's back in disguise. His name still won't turn up in the NET Database, but the Scanner reads through the disguise where the database can't.

If you're still getting a handle on how to read suspicious customers before a gnome enters the picture, the beginners guide covers the fundamentals worth knowing first.
