StarRupture Survival Manual: How To Eat, Drink, And Not Die

My first base looked like a robot threw up conveyor belts, but yours doesn't have to be a total disaster if you follow a few simple rules.

While you are busy worrying about conveyor belts and firing angles, your biological meters are slowly ticking down to zero. The tutorial glosses over this, and suddenly your screen is flashing red and your character is making noises that sound like a deflating tire. Surviving the elements here is just as hard as surviving the bugs. I have mapped out exactly what you need to put in your mouth to keep moving.

The Secret Stash In The Pod

I mentioned this before, but it bears repeating because it is the number one cause of early game death. When you crash land, check the storage lockers in your pod.

There are 20 Rations sitting in there. These are the best food items you will see for a long time. They don't give you Toxicity and they fill you up. If you ignore them and run off into the woods, you are going to be eating questionable alien weeds within twenty minutes. Grab the rations. Save them for emergencies.

Hydration: The Blue Flowers

Dehydration is the silent killer. You will run out of water faster than food.

You are looking for Hydrobulbs. They look like a cross between a lily of the valley and a desk lamp. They glow blue, which makes them easy to spot at night. The best place to find them early on is North of your landing site, near the small lake.

Eating one restores your hydration instantly. I recommend gathering a stack of them whenever you pass by the water. They respawn, so don't be afraid to clear out a patch.

Calories: The Orange Spikes

Hunger kills you slower, but it limits your stamina and health regeneration.

The main food source on the planet is Polifruit. These are the tall, orange plants that look like futuristic cattails. They are everywhere. Eating one gives you about 11 Calories. It isn't a five-star meal, but it keeps you alive.

If you are near the purple cacti (usually up on the ridges), look for Pricklers. These are little orange fruits growing on top of the cactus. They are a "two-for-one" deal that gives you both calories and hydration. If you see them, prioritize them.

Toxicity and The Shrooms

Here is the catch. Almost everything you eat on this planet is slightly poisonous. This is tracked by the Toxicity Meter.

If this meter hits 100%, you vomit. This empties your stomach and dehydration meters, which basically puts you back at square one and dying faster than before. To fix this, you need Purplant.

These are purple mushrooms that grow on the sides of rocks. They look like barnacles. Eating one drops your toxicity by 40 points. The downside is that they also strip away any positive buffs you have, but that is a fair trade for not puking your guts out in the middle of a firefight.

Healing: The Rare Rocks

Health doesn't regenerate on its own unless you are full on food and water, and even then, it is slow.

To heal quickly, you need Star Tears. These are blue crystals found on small, non-mining rocks. They are rare. Eating one heals 20 HP but adds a bit of toxicity. Use them sparingly until you unlock the Med Tool later in the tech tree (Future Health Solutions Level 3).

Clouds of Death

Aside from starvation, the environment has two other ways to kill you.

First is Radiation. These are the bright lime-green zones. If you walk in, your shield fails. If you stay, you die. Just walk away. There is nothing in there worth dying for yet.

Second is the Infection Cloud. When you kill the blue bugs (Vermin), they pop like a balloon filled with toxic gas. If you are standing next to them when they die, you get choked out. The strategy here is simple. Shoot them from far away. If they get close, kill them and immediately sprint in the opposite direction.

Keeping It Together

Once you have a steady supply of Hydrobulbs and Polifruit, the survival aspect becomes manageable. You stop worrying about your health bar and can finally focus on the real grind. Speaking of the grind, you are going to need to know which Mega-Corporations are worth your time and which ones are scamming you.
