Starsand Island Character Customization: How to Change Your Hair and Clothes

Like any decent farming sim, Starsand Island lets you customize your character at the very beginning of the game. However, unlike most farming sims, it stubbornly locks you out of changing your look again until you prove you can handle basic livestock.

If you are a few hours into the game, you probably have a pocket full of cosmetic rewards and absolutely no idea how to equip them. You can interact with physical wardrobes in your house early on, but if you want true freedom to swap your outfits, change your hairstyle, and adjust your makeup on the fly, you have to unlock specific apps on your in-game phone.

I spent way too long running around the island looking for a barber before I figured out the strange logic of this game. Here is exactly what you need to do to unlock the Wardrobe and Makeup apps so you can stop running around in your starter gear.

The Apprentice Rancher Quest

To unlock the customization apps, you have to complete the "Become an Apprentice Rancher" questline. Yes, you have to learn how to raise rabbits before the game trusts you with a comb.

Your first step is to locate Pastelle, the island's ranching mentor. Talk to her, and she will explain that Lunelle, the owner of the local boutique, desperately needs some Rabbit Fluff for a new clothing design. It is your job to supply it.

Building the Rabbit Hutch

You cannot just catch wild rabbits. You need to build a proper infrastructure. Open your crafting menu and look for the Rabbit Hutch blueprint. You will need to gather Fiber and Softwood Planks to build it. If you need help expanding your inventory to carry all this wood, check out my Starsand Island Storage and Backpack Guide.

Once the hutch is built and placed on your farm, you need to purchase four baby rabbits and place them inside.

Harvesting the Fluff

Rabbits do not produce fluff instantly. You have to wait. Feed them, take care of them, and let the in-game timer tick down. Once the rabbits mature and start shedding, interact with the hutch to collect the Rabbit Fluff. Take the fluff directly to Lunelle at her clothing shop.

Unlocking the Apps

When you hand over the Rabbit Fluff to Lunelle, she will thank you by gifting you a brand-new outfit. More importantly, this interaction permanently unlocks the Wardrobe and Makeup apps on your phone. You no longer need to run back to your house to use a physical mirror.

How to Use the Customization Apps

Open your phone menu at any time to access these features.

The App What You Can Change
The Wardrobe App This handles all your clothing. You can swap hats, tops, bottoms, and accessories. You can also save full outfit presets to quickly switch between your farming clothes and your town clothes. Any new clothing you buy from Lunelle automatically appears here.
The Makeup App The name is misleading. This app is your full character editor. You use this to change your hairstyle, adjust hair color, change your eye color, and tweak the shape of your eyebrows and eyelashes.
Once you have played around with your new apps and updated your look, do not forget to return to Pastelle. Speaking with her will officially wrap up the questline and reward you with the Apprentice Rancher Certificate.

Where to Find Better Clothes

If you are looking at your newly unlocked Wardrobe app and feeling underwhelmed by the options, do not panic. The clothing you see in the early game shop is just the baseline.

The really impressive, high-tier outfits you see other players wearing online are usually locked behind progression. You have to buy out the basic stock at Lunelle's boutique to force her shop to level up and expand its inventory. You will also earn exclusive clothing by completing major story quests, maxing out your friendship levels with specific villagers, and participating in seasonal island events. Keep playing, keep hoarding your coins, and your closet will fill up eventually.
