Subnautica 2 Guide: How to Find Every Angel Comb Adaptation
Showing up to an alien water planet with a fragile human body is a terrible idea.
If you load up a Creative Mode save, the game hands you every genetic upgrade right from the start. Survival Mode is a completely different story. You drop into the water with a fragile body that cannot digest local fish, withstand high heat, or even read alien technology. To fix these fatal flaws, you have to track down massive, tree-like organic structures called Angel Combs. Interacting with the pink bulbs on these plants permanently alters your DNA. I tracked down the coordinates and requirements for all four current adaptations so you can stop dying to basic environmental hazards.
The Unmissable Tutorial Upgrade
You actually secure your very first mutation before you even crash into the ocean.
Pressure Tolerance
This is the only freebie the game gives you. During the prologue sequence inside the habitat, right before you escape via the Lifepod, you are forced to interact with an Angel Comb. This grants you the Pressure Tolerance adaptation. It allows you to breathe highly pressurized air, meaning your oxygen meter will not deplete when you are standing in dry rooms or unsubmerged spaces.
Fixing Your Terrible Stomach
Once you hit the water, your first major hurdle is starvation. If you try to eat the local fish with your default human stomach, you take damage.
Digestion
Before you waste time stockpiling fish you cannot eat, you need to swim north. The Angel Comb holding the Digestion adaptation sits roughly 150 to 180 meters north-northeast of your Lifepod. NOA will eventually give you a waypoint for Anita's Blackbox, which sits right next to this exact flower.
You do not need any special tools for this one. Just swim up to the glowing pink sac and interact with it to permanently cure your indigestion. While you are there, make sure to scan the colony supplies sitting on the workstation directly in front of the plant. If you need help figuring out the most efficient meals to cook after grabbing this, check out my Subnautica 2 Food and Water guide.
Surviving the Boiling Depths
The training wheels come off for the third upgrade. The game stops handing you free interactions and forces you to clear viral infections before the plant opens up.
Heat Tolerance
You absolutely need this adaptation to explore the eastern magma zones and gather rare resources like sulfur and gold. The Angel Comb for Heat Tolerance is located near Wander's blackbox recording.
Unlike the previous flowers, this one is completely sealed shut by a viral infection. You have to craft a Sonic Resonator to blast away the glowing blue Bloom Cankers spreading across the plant's two tendrils. Once you clear the tendrils, you return to the main bulb, shoot the remaining nodules, and grab the upgrade. I wrote a dedicated walkthrough detailing exactly how to clear this specific cave system in my Subnautica 2 Heat Tolerance guide.
Cracking the Alien Language
The final adaptation is locked behind a massive late-game expedition.
Axum Vision
This mutation allows you to perceive and interact with mysterious Axum technology and alien languages. To find it, you have to travel roughly 1,800 meters east of your Lifepod, pushing well past the Alien Base. The game naturally directs you here after you finish your objectives in the Tadpole Pens.
Do not attempt this swim by hand. The sheer distance and the presence of multiple leviathans make a Tadpole vehicle mandatory. You also need to craft the Depth Module for your sub, because this Angel Comb sits well below the 250-meter crush depth threshold.
When you finally locate the flower, you will realize your standard Sonic Resonator is useless. The Bloom Cankers infecting this specific Angel Comb are shielded. If you swim close, they clamp shut to block your sonic blasts. To bypass this defense mechanism and cleanse the plant, you must track down the fragments for a totally different tool called the Feedback Resonator.
