Subnautica 2 Guide: How to Fix the Power Plant and Open the Observatory

Staring blankly at alien technology that refuses to turn on is a right of passage on Proteus.

A bioluminescent alien creature with wing-like fins and a glowing purple core in the deep-sea environment of Subnautica 2.

If you've pushed roughly 1,100 meters east of your Lifepod, past the Tadpole Pens and straight through leviathan territory, you've likely hit the Alien Ruins biome. Right in the middle of this area is a massive Observatory door that simply will not open. The game tells you it requires a massive amount of power, but it doesn't hold your hand on how to provide it. You have to repair a gigantic broken turbine, and the process is anything but straightforward. I've broken down exactly how to navigate the ruins, secure the right genetic upgrades, and farm the absurd amount of metal required to turn the lights back on.

The Prerequisites for Repair

Before you even look at the broken turbine, you need to make sure your gear and your DNA are actually ready for this task.

First, your standard Tadpole vehicle needs a depth upgrade, as you'll be diving deep into the ruins. Second, you have to upgrade your standard Scanner into a Bioscanner, and your Sonic Resonator into a Feedback Resonator.

Most importantly, you need the Axum Vision Adaptation. You can't fix alien technology if you can't read the language. This requires clearing the heavily shielded Angel Comb directly underneath the Power Plant. If you haven't mutated your eyes yet, stop right here. I've detailed the exact path to clearing those specific Bloom Cankers in my Subnautica 2 Adaptations guide. Once you have Axum Vision, you can actually understand the control terminals.

Gathering the Repair Materials

With your new eyes, swim along the cliffside near the turbine and locate the lower control room. Press the button on the terminal to lower the structure, then swim up to the massive propellers. Look for some metal crates left behind by colonists and grab the "Turbine Repair Plan" databank entry. Finally, scan the propeller with your Bioscanner and switch to your Habitat Builder to reveal the repair cost.

If you are playing on Survival Mode, get ready for a massive grind. You need a functioning base Processor to smelt all of this.

Required Ingot Raw Material Cost & Locations
10x Titanium Ingot Requires 30x Titanium total. Found everywhere on the ocean floor.
10x Strontium Requires 20x Celestine total. Found in deep caves.
10x Mangalloy Ingot Requires 10x Titanium Ingots, 10x Atacamites (dark crystal nodes in Alien Ruins), and 10x Troilites (dark green minerals near Metal Farms pool).

If you are struggling to manage your base power while smelting all of this, check out my Subnautica 2 Processor guide for tips on keeping the lights on.

Activating the Power Plant

Once you've dumped all those hard-earned ingots into the broken turbine, you have to manually restart the system. The lower generator control room is easy, just hit the single button to partially start the plant.

The upper generator control room, located higher up the cliffside, requires a bit more effort. There are two side terminals with several sliders and dials. You need to interact with each switch, aligning the symbols with the on-screen indicators until they turn green. Once the dials are set, press the center button on each of the side terminals (marked with a claw-like symbol). Finally, move to the main central terminal and hit the large button to fully activate the generator.
