Tomodachi Life: Living The Dream - A Beginner's Guide

Managing a virtual island full of demanding, hungry clones is surprisingly stressful if you go in blind.

Welcome to your new job as the omnipotent caretaker of an island full of weirdos. It sounds cute on paper until you realize these digital avatars will absolutely refuse to function without your constant supervision. They will happily sit in an empty room and complain about being hungry rather than walking to the grocery store themselves. Now before you waste your first few hours throwing expensive items at every minor inconvenience, let me outline the exact daily routine I use to keep my island from devolving into total anarchy.

If you want to see everything else I have written on this bizarre little simulator, make sure to browse our Tomodachi Life hub.

The Morning Sweep

Every time you boot up the game, your first stop has to be the apartment building. Looking at the exterior windows tells you exactly what kind of messes you need to clean up. You are looking for specific problem bubbles floating in the windows.

Black squiggles mean someone is having a terrible time. You need to click on them immediately to figure out what went wrong. Usually they had a fight or got rejected, and ignoring this just leaves them miserable and useless. If you are struggling to fix these bad moods, I put together a dedicated guide on handling friendship fights and depression.

Green outlines mean the Mii wants to play a minigame. Always do these. You will either win a treasure you can sell for cash or an item you can gift later. Pink hearts are the big ones. This means someone wants to confess their love or propose. Handling romances properly is a massive part of the game, so you will want to reference my breakdown on how to get married to avoid breaking digital hearts.

Feeding the Beast

Food is not just a survival mechanic here. It is the primary way you level up your residents. Every Mii has an invisible stomach gauge. Your goal every single day is to fill that gauge to the top for as many residents as you can afford.

Do not just buy the most expensive food in the shop. You need to find their specific favorites. Every time you feed a Mii something they love, they get a massive experience boost and their happiness skyrockets. Feeding them something they hate will cause them to literally melt into a puddle of despair, which wastes your money and ruins their mood. Experiment with cheap foods first. When you find a "Super All-Time Favorite," write it down.

Leveling up a Mii gives you the option to reward them. Always prioritize giving them a song or a unique interior room design before giving them basic pocket money. Teaching them songs allows you to put on concerts at the observation tower, which is frankly hilarious and worth the effort.

Understanding the Clones

You are going to notice pretty quickly that some of your residents just do not get along, no matter how much you try to force them into the same room. This is entirely tied to the initial setup you did when creating them. If you completely messed up a character's traits and need to fix it, read my walkthrough on how to edit, delete, and change Mii names.

If you are trying to strategically build an island where everyone interacts in a specific way, you need to understand the underlying code. The game relies heavily on how you tune their behavior sliders. Check out my breakdown of all personality types so you can actually predict how these little agents of chaos will react to each other.

The Financial Grind

You are going to need cash. Expanding the island, buying ridiculous outfits, and funding space trips is not cheap.

Your most reliable daily income is the fountain. Go there every single day. Your residents will literally throw money at you just for existing. The amount you get depends on how many Miis you have and how happy they are overall. This is why doing the morning sweep to clear out bad moods is so critical. Happy islands print money.

You should also be selling the treasures you win from the green bubble minigames at the pawn shop. Holding onto a generic tissue box or a plastic diamond does absolutely nothing for you. Sell it all. If you want to dive deeper into the island economy, I have a full guide covering money, shops, and island size expansions.

The Daily Checklist

A quick reference sheet for what you absolutely need to click on before putting the game down for the day.

Daily Task The Payoff
Check the Fountain Free cash based on overall island happiness. Always do this first.
Clear Black/Orange Bubbles Prevents residents from falling into a depression spiral that tanks your economy.
Play Minigames (Green Bubbles) Earn treasures to sell at the pawn shop for large chunks of change.
Watch Mii News Broadcasts twice a day. Sometimes awards unique items and updates you on island events.
Visit the Shops Inventory rotates daily. Grab new foods and clothes to discover new Mii favorites.

Documenting the Madness

As you get into your routine, you are going to witness some truly unhinged interactions. Two people in hot dog suits having a rap battle on the beach is just a standard Tuesday. The game actually makes it fairly easy to document these moments. Instead of pointing your phone at the screen like an amateur, read up on how to properly share Miis and screenshots so you can export the high quality chaos directly to your social feeds.

The Long Game

Eventually your island will stabilize. The cash flow will become steady and you will have most of the basic problems figured out. That is when you start looking at the bigger picture.

There is an actual ending to this experience, along with a series of difficult challenges to complete. If you are the type of person who needs to see the credits roll before you can move on with your life, you will want to bookmark my final guide on trophies, the ending, and travel tickets. Keep up with the daily grind I have outlined here and you will hit those endgame milestones significantly faster.
