How to Play Co-op in YAPYAP

Being a magical nuisance is fun, but being a magical nuisance with four other idiots is an art form.

YAPYAP is essentially a simulator for gremlin energy. Your entire goal is to break into an Archmage’s tower, clog his toilets, break his piano, and scream incantations into your microphone until he has a bad day. While you can technically do this alone, the game is infinitely better (and survivable) when you have a squad to watch your back.

The monsters patrolling the halls are not forgiving to solo players, and the vandalism quotas get steep. If you want to hit those high scores without getting turned into a stain on the rug, you need to bring backup. Here is how to set up a lobby and how many people you can actually invite.

How to Invite Friends

The game doesn’t have a traditional main menu "Invite" button right in your face. It leans into the diegetic interface, which is a fancy way of saying you have to interact with an object in the game world to make things happen.

First, you need to be in your Hut. This is your safe hub area before you start a run. If you are already in the middle of a heist, you can’t invite anyone. Finish the night or die trying, then regroup at the Hut.

Go to the ground floor. In the middle of the room, you will see a glowing magical sphere called the Ponder Orb.

Walk up to it and interact with it. This opens your Steam friends list directly. From here, just click the invite button next to the friend you want to summon.

The Lazy Method If you don't want to walk all the way to the orb, you can cheat the system. Open your Steam Overlay (Shift+Tab usually), right-click your friend's name, and hit "Invite to Game." They can also right-click your name and hit "Join Game." This bypasses the orb entirely, but it feels less wizardly.

Max Player Count and Public Lobbies

Right now, YAPYAP supports a maximum of 5 players in a single session. That means you plus four friends.

It is important to note that there are no public lobbies in the current build. You cannot queue up and get matched with random wizards. You strictly need to have people on your Steam friends list to play.

This means you actually need to coordinate with people you know. If you were hoping to just jump in and annoy strangers with your microphone skills, you are out of luck for now. Gather your party, check your mics, and get ready to yell spells until your neighbors call the police.
