Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred Fishing Guide: How to Catch Every Mythic Demon of the Deep
Sanctuary's demons don't stop trying to kill you, so the game hands you a fishing rod and every liquid surface on the map becomes a place to hide from that for five minutes.
Fishing requires the Lord of Hatred expansion and access to Skovos. No workaround exists if you don't own it. Here's how to unlock the rod, where it actually works, and why the community's convinced there's a secret recipe buried in here somewhere.
Getting the Rod
Push through the early Lord of Hatred campaign until a priority quest called "Fishing" shows up. Once you're standing on the first major Skovos map, head south along the coastline until you hit a dock. A man named Shi Yugong is waiting there. Talk to him, sit through a short tutorial, and he hands you a rod on the spot. That's the entire unlock. No grind, no side conditions.
Three side quests build out from there: "Favor For A Favor," "The One That Got Away," and "The Fish of Dreams." All three send you into new corners of the map chasing specific catches, so keep an eye out as you explore.
The Actual Mechanic Isn't Complicated
Stand near water, pull up your Action Wheel, and select the Fishing emote. Bind it to a hotkey in your Controls menu immediately. Digging through a wheel every time you spot a pond isn't worth the friction when one button press does the job.
Cast the line and wait. Somewhere between ten and fifteen seconds a splash appears at the end of your line, paired with a sound cue and a fish icon over your character's head. The second that icon shows up, hit any skill button. Nail the timing and you get a "Perfect" rating, which pulls in an extra fish for the same cast.
You'll haul in plenty of junk chasing the Mythic Uniques. That's just how the loot pool works here, and if your screen's already a mess from regular drops, that's a separate problem worth solving on its own.
Cast Anywhere the Game Lets You
Forget scenic lakes. If a surface has a liquid texture, try it. Rivers, standard ponds, lava pools, and yes, vats of blood have all produced a catch for me personally. There's no glowing indicator marking a good spot. If the emote fires without an error, you're fishing. That includes dungeons, the Dry Steppes, and Helltides, which makes fishing one of the only activities in this game you can slot in without going out of your way.
Different zones carry different species too, so if you're chasing a specific fish for the archive, location matters as much as luck.
Why Bother Catching Any of This
Every fish goes into your Consumables tab. Consume it and the catch locks into your Codex permanently, counting toward the achievement for all 117 unique species in Sanctuary. Rarity runs Common through Mythic Unique across six tiers, and the harder tiers show a difficulty rating on-screen the moment you land one.
Selling fish for gold is close to pointless. The market inflates fast enough that even a Rare catch nets you next to nothing for the time spent reeling it in.
The Horadric Cube Rumor
Here's the part actually worth your attention if you like a mystery. Word's been going around that certain fish combinations unlock something in the Horadric Cube. I've thrown a stack of different combos in myself and gotten nothing. That said, this is Blizzard, and Blizzard has a documented habit of hiding secrets behind mechanics that look pointless on the surface. Save at least one of every high tier catch in your stash. If a recipe drops in a future patch, you don't want to be re-farming a Mythic Unique fish from scratch.
The Species Archive
Every Rare Base species on that list also spawns Giant, Tiny, Spectral, Demonic, Glittering, and Celestial variants scattered across the Legendary and Unique tiers, so the 117 target climbs fast once you start actually hunting for them.
Fishing won't touch your build's power in any measurable way. But it's the rare mechanic in this game that asks nothing of you except standing near water, which after a session grinding through my Boss Trophies guide is exactly the kind of downtime worth taking.
