Hytale Fishing Guide: Traps, Bait & How to Cook Your Catch
If you are looking for a fishing rod in Hytale, stop looking. You aren't going to find one.
Unlike Minecraft or Stardew Valley, Hytale doesn't want you standing on a dock waiting for a bobber to dip. Instead, it takes a more passive, industrial approach with Fishing Traps. It’s less "zen afternoon by the lake" and more "commercial fishing operation." I spent some time figuring out the crafting chain so you don't have to guess. Here is exactly how to set up your traps, bait them for better rewards, and cook the results.
Step 1: The Farmer's Workbench
You can't just craft a trap with your bare hands. You need a specialized station called the Farmer's Workbench. To make matters more complicated, you need to upgrade it before it lets you touch any fishing gear.
Crafting the Base Bench
First, craft the basic Farmer's Workbench using a standard Workbench.
6x Any Tree Logs
20x Plant Fibers
Upgrading to Tier 2
The Tier 1 bench is useless for us. You need to upgrade it to Tier 2 immediately. This requires some specific farming materials.
50x Essence of Life (Get this by harvesting crops or killing animals)
5x Wheat
5x Lettuce (You might need to grow this yourself; buy seeds at the bench)
5x Softwood Logs (Look for Beech, Aspen, or Banyan trees)
Step 2: Crafting and Baiting the Trap
Once your bench is Tier 2, you can finally build the Fishing Trap.
10x Any Wood
50x Essence of Life
20x Plant Fibers
1x Iron Ingot (Smelt Iron Ore in a furnace)
Using Bait (Optional but Recommended)
You can toss an unbaited trap into the water, but if you want faster results, use Fish Bait. You craft this at the same Tier 2 Farmer's Workbench using 3x Fruit and 5x Essence of Life. To use it, place the trap in the water, hold the bait in your hand, and Right-Click the trap.
Step 3: Where to Fish & How to Harvest
Location matters. Do not throw your trap in a puddle. You need deep water (at least 4 blocks deep) for the trap to work consistently. Oceans and large rivers are your best bet.
Place the trap, bait it, and walk away. This is a passive activity. Come back later (usually half a game day), walk up to the trap, and press 'F' to harvest your catch.
Step 4: Cooking Your Catch
You can't eat the fish whole. You need to process it first.
Process: Use a Chef's Stove (Crafted with Copper Ingots, Logs, and Stone) to turn your caught fish into Raw Fish fillets. The higher the rarity of the catch, the more fillets you get.
Cook: Take the Raw Fish to a Campfire (4 Sticks + 2 Rubble). Add wood for fuel and cook it into Grilled Fish.
Grilled Fish is a solid healing item, making this whole industrial process worth the effort. Alternatively, if you are desperate and see a fish swimming in shallow water, you can just stab it with a sword. It’s inefficient, but it works.
