Slay The Spire 2 Crystal Sphere Guide: How To Survive The Divine Event
Finding a question mark room in the Spire usually brings a momentary sigh of relief, until a shady fortune teller demands your hard earned gold to play a cosmic game of Minesweeper.
I am a massive fan of hitting every single Unknown node on the map. It breaks up the monotony of getting my teeth kicked in by elite enemies and gives me a chance to salvage a doomed run. In Slay the Spire 2, the event rooms are arguably more brutal than the actual combat encounters. The Crystal Sphere event is a perfect example of this punishing design philosophy. You walk in expecting a free heal or a simple card removal trade, and suddenly you are staring at a grid of hidden tiles with the word "Divine" plastered across your screen.
I initially thought the word "Divine" was tied to a character stance or a specific deck build. It is not. It is a completely isolated minigame explicitly designed to drain your resources or fill your deck with absolute garbage. It forces you to gamble your future on a few blind clicks. If you are struggling with the overarching mechanics of the sequel and barely making it to these event rooms alive, you should probably pause and read my Slay the Spire 2 Beginners Guide before you try to outsmart a fortune teller.
The Entry Fee: Pay Up Or Suffer
The game does not let you politely decline the Crystal Sphere and walk away. You are trapped in the tent, and you have to pay the toll to proceed. You are given two distinct options to start the event. You can either cough up a hefty chunk of gold to "Uncover Future" or accept a horrifying penalty called "Payment Plan" to play for free.
I cannot stress this enough: do not take the Debt curse unless you are completely out of options. A Debt is an unplayable curse card that permanently infects your deck. Every single time you draw this useless piece of paper during a fight, you automatically lose 10 gold at the end of your turn. If you are running a fast cycling deck that draws a lot of cards, you will hemorrhage money. A single boss fight could easily cost you 50 gold just because you drew the curse five times in a row. You can check my Slay the Spire 2 Tier List Unlocks to see which characters actually have the toolkit to survive hoarding curses, but generally, it is a terrible idea.
To make matters worse, removing a curse at a Merchant costs 75 gold. You are mathematically ruining your economy by taking the Payment Plan. Just pay the upfront fee of 54 to 79 gold. Think of it as a necessary business expense to keep your deck functional.
How The Divine Minigame Actually Works
Once you pay the toll, you stare into the crystal ball. It presents a grid covered in hidden tiles. Underneath these tiles are powerful rewards, piles of gold, and devastating penalties. You are given a specific number of "Divination" attempts, which serve as your clicks on the board.
You have two tools at your disposal: Small Divination and Big Divination. You have to choose exactly how greedy you want to be.
Small Divination
This is the cowardly, precise approach, and I highly respect it. Clicking this option reveals a very small, concentrated section of the grid. You are playing it safe, carefully peeking under the fog of war to see if there is a relic or a potion nearby. You avoid blindly stumbling into a run ending curse. It takes longer, but it keeps you in control of the risk.
Big Divination
This option is strictly for the degenerates. Big Divination blows away a massive chunk of the hidden grid in a single click. You can uncover three amazing rewards instantly. The catch is that any negative items you uncover are automatically applied to your run. You do not get to decline them on the loot screen. If you click Big Divination and accidentally uncover a horrible penalty, you are instantly stuck with it.
The Crystal Sphere Loot Pool
If you survive the minigame without destroying your deck, the rewards are actually phenomenal. You collect everything you uncovered on a final loot screen. The game graciously allows you to skip taking any standard items you do not want, though again, curses and instant penalties bypass this screen.
Here is exactly what you are digging for in the dark:
Gold: The most common drop on the board. If you are smart with your divination attempts, you can easily uncover enough gold to completely refund your initial entry fee, making the entire event a net positive.
Card Drops: You can find standard combat cards to bolster your deck. If you are incredibly lucky, you might even uncover gold tier event cards. If you need a refresher on the new mechanics tied to some of these drops, my Slay the Spire 2 Quest Cards Guide breaks down exactly how to maximize their value.
Hidden Relics: Finding a relic inside the crystal ball is the holy grail. The game notifies you that "your aura is gleaming" and displays a small box on the grid. If you are curious how these event rewards stack up against boss drops, take a look at my Slay the Spire 2 All Ancients Relics Guide.
Potions: Standard test tubes are scattered around the board, giving you a quick consumable edge for the next elite fight.
The Save Reset Trick
I am going to let you in on a very dirty secret. Slay the Spire 2 is a cruel, unforgiving game that actively wants you to fail. I have zero moral objections to cheating a game that relies heavily on punishing RNG.
If you use a Big Divination and accidentally uncover a catastrophic curse or penalty, do not click anything else. Hit pause and forcefully quit to the main menu. When you hit "Continue" to reload your save file, the game will drop you right back at the beginning of the Crystal Sphere event.
You will still have to pay the entry fee, but the hidden layout of the grid remains exactly the same. You now know exactly where the traps are located. You can confidently use your divination attempts to scoop up the best items while entirely avoiding the cursed tiles. It is save scumming in its purest form, and I highly encourage you to use it. The developers left this loophole in the game code, so I consider it a legitimate strategy for survival.
Understanding where this event fits into the broader narrative is complicated, but my Slay the Spire 2 Epochs Timeline Guide attempts to make sense of the lore behind these strange encounters. For a full breakdown of the crazy items you can find in other Unknown rooms, hit up my Slay the Spire 2 Best Relics Guide.
The Crystal Sphere is a bizarre detour from the standard card slinging combat, but mastering it is crucial for a successful run. Just remember to pay the gold, avoid the Debt curse like a plague, and never be afraid to hit the quit button when the game tries to screw you over. Trying to survive high ascension levels is hard enough without actively handicapping yourself.
